Men's Basketball Falls at Army West Point, 73-63

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite graduate student Javante McCoy leading all players with 23 points and classmate Sukhmail Mathon hauling in a game-high 11 rebounds, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped a 73-63 decision at Army West Point Thursday night.

The Black Knights (10-7, 4-1 PL) shot 50 percent in the first half for a 36-29 lead and withstood multiple charges in the second from the Terriers (11-7, 2-3 PL) to improve to 7-1 on the season at Christl Arena.

McCoy recorded four 3-pointers alongside four assists and five rebounds to move up to No. 9 all-time at BU with 178 career treys. Finishing one point shy of a second consecutive double-double, Mathon is now just six rebounds away from becoming the ninth Terrier to reach 700 career rebounds. Senior Walter Whyte was the second Terrier to score in double figures with 14 points, as BU finished 24-of-61 (.393) from the field. 

Helped by four steals, Josh Caldwell was one of four Black Knights to score in double figures at 16 points. Jalen Rucker posted 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Aaron Duhart earned 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds, Nolan Naess came off the bench with 11 points. Army overcome a 9-3 deficit in made 3-pointers by posting a 20-6 advantage in made free throws and 38-22 lead in points in the paint.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • McCoy flushed a 3-pointer to give BU an early 7-5 lead at 16:04, but the Black Knights responded with an 11-1 run over the next five minutes to grab the lead for good, as Naess pushed Army ahead, 16-8, on a layup.
  • Whyte drained a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions to pull the Terriers within one, 22-21, at 6:56.
  • The Black Knights used consecutive layups from Chris Mann and Caldwell to push their lead to 32-25 and would enter the locker room ahead, 36-29.
  • Aaron Duhart started the second half with a 3-pointer to give Army its first double-digit lead.
  • Facing a 48-35 deficit, junior Ethan Brittain-Watts and McCoy hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull within seven at 13:07.
  • After McCoy cut Army's lead to 53-45 on a turnaround jumper with 10:54 left, Army went on a 13-5 spurt over the next six minutes to pull away.
GAME NOTES
  • With his fifth 20+ point performance of the season and 17th overall, McCoy now owns 1,636 career points, five shy of BU Hall of Famer Steven Wright ('80) for No. 6 in the program record book.
  • Mathon recorded double-digit rebounds for the 10th time this season and 17th time overall to increase his total to 693, four behind No. 10 Marty Schoepfer ('70).
  • A week after becoming the 40th Terrier to reach 1,000 points, Whyte moved into a tie for 32nd all-time with Carlos Strong ('10) at 1,038 career points. 
  • Shooting 25-of-55 (.455) from the field and 39-35 advantage in rebounds, Army cut BU's lead in the series to 20-15.

  • The Terriers will return home to host Navy on Sunday (Jan. 16) at 1 p.m.
