January 13, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sophomore goaltender Drew Commesso and former Boston University standout David Warsofsky have been named to the 2022 U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey Team, USA Hockey announced on Thursday.
Both Commesso and Warsofsky will be making their Olympic debuts this February in Beijing. Former Terrier player and coach David Quinn is the head coach of the 2022 U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey Team, with his former teammate and assistant coach Scott Young joining him on the Team USA staff.
A native of Norwell, Mass., Commesso most recently represented the United States at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship. In his lone preliminary-round game, Commesso made 23 saves in a 3-2 win over Slovakia en route to being selected as his squad's player of the game. He has played his best hockey of the season during the Terriers' six-game unbeaten streak, going 4-0-1 with a .948 save percentage and a 1.55 goals-against average in five starts since the beginning of December. Commesso has averaged 29.4 stops in those five starts and has allowed just one goal in three of his four victories. A second-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2020, Commesso owns a 14-10-4 record over two seasons with BU
Warsofsky, a member of the Terriers' 2009 national championship team, is currently playing for ERC Ingolstadt in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, Germany's top professional men's hockey league. He has played 55 games in the NHL for four different clubs, including the Boston Bruins, with whom he made his NHL debut during the 2013-14 campaign. A native of Marshfield, Mass., Warsofsky played 476 games in the AHL, recording 57 goals and 195 assists for 252 points, and also serving as captain of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins during the 2019-20 season. At BU, Warsofsky totaled 68 points (22g, 46a) in 113 contests. He also became the first Terrier to win gold at World Juniors, doing so in 2010.
This will be the 15th straight Olympics that at least one Terrier will represent their country on the ice. It is also the second straight Games in which a current men's hockey player has been selected to play in the Olympics, as Jordan Greenway joined Team USA in 2018 during his junior season with the Terriers.
Team USA is scheduled to open preliminary-round play in Beijing against host China on Feb. 10.
