Men's Basketball Welcomes Navy to The Roof Sunday Afternoon

BOSTON – Following a two-game road trip, the Boston University men's basketball team returns to Case Gym to host Navy on Sunday with tip-off slated for 1 p.m.

Sunday's winner will become the first Patriot League squad to reach 12 victories on the season. The Terriers recorded a split during the week, posting a 79-53 win at American before dropping a 73-63 decision at Army. The Midshipmen also had a split with a 69-55 win at Lafayette and most recently a 69-50 home loss to Colgate. 

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • Graduate student Sukhmail Mathon ranks 18th nationally with a Patriot League-high 9.8 rpg and just needs six rebounds to become the ninth Terrier to reach 700 total.
  • Owner of seven double-doubles, Mathon is second on the team at 14.1 ppg, behind classmate Javante McCoy (17.5 ppg), who is just five points behind Steven Wright for No. 6 all-time in the program record book at 1,641 career points. 
  • Senior Walter Whyte (13.0 ppg, 6.6 rpg) earned BU's other double-double this season at American this past Monday.
  • The Terriers rank 63rd nationally at 74.4 FT% and are shooting over 80 FT% during the final five minutes of games. Mathon is seventh nationally with 81 total free throws made while shooting 78.6 FT%.
  • BU is 5-2 at The Roof this season with a 1-1 record in Patriot League play. The Terriers started with a 63-61 win over Bucknell before falling to Loyola Maryland, 66-58.
  • BU is averaging 68.5 ppg and 43.5 FG% while holding opponents to 65.0 ppg and 44.0 FG%.
SCOUTING NAVY
  • Owner of a 66-58 win at then-No. 25 Virginia, the Midshipmen are 7-2 in games away from home. They started conference play with 70-56 win at Holy Cross and 69-55 victory at Lafayette.
  • Navy ranks 17th nationally in scoring defense (59.6 ppg), 44th in 3FG% defense (29.4) and 61st in rebounding margin (5.3).
  • Like BU, Navy had four players start every game until Greg Summers (10.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg) suffered an injury at Holy Cross on Jan. 1.
  • John Carter Jr. leads at 13.9 ppg with Tyler Nelson third on the team at 8.3 ppg.
  • Navy is averaging 66.7 ppg and 45.2 FG% while hopding opponents to 41.3 FG%. 
SERIES HISTORY
  • BU leads the all-time series, 12-6, after suffering an 83-71 loss at Navy back on Jan. 4.
  • The Midshipmen were the first opponent this season to shoot over 50.0 FG% against BU and posted a 23-11 advantage in second-chance points thanks to a 37-22 lead in rebounds.
  • The Terriers won the last home matchup in the 2020 Patriot League quarterfinals, 69-63, to snap a 10-game streak in which the road team was victorious.
