BALTIMORE, Md. – Boosted by graduate student
Sukhmail Mathon's ninth double-double of the season and sophomore
Caelan Jones' personal-best five 3-pointers, the Boston University men's basketball team claimed a 67-50 win at Loyola Maryland Wednesday night.
The Terriers (12-8, 3-4 PL) posted a 42-25 advantage in rebounds and 26-5 lead in offensive bench production to snap the Greyhounds' (11-7, 5-2 PL) five-game win streak. BU also handed Loyola its first home loss of the season by going on a 25-0 run over a stretch of 14:36.
Jones went 5-of-9 from behind the arc to tie senior
Walter Whyte at 15 points apiece, while Mathon posted a game-high 12 rebounds alongside 12 points. Graduate student
Javante McCoy nearly had a triple-double with 10 points, eight rebounds and season-tying seven assists, as BU shot 23-of-53 (.434) and a nearly perfect 12-of-13 (.923) at the charity stripe.
Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Cam Spencer tallied a game-high 19 points as the lone Greyhound in double figures but needed 17 shot attempts to reach the mark while adding three steals. No one on the team had more than four rebounds, as Loyola finished 18-of-50 (.360).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Loyola won the tip and quickly scored on Spencer's layup.
- After Jones flushed his first 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 6-5, the Greyhounds scored seven straight for their largest lead of the game, 13-5, at 13:05 on Veljko Ilic's layup.
- Jones and Spencer exchanged 3-pointers on the next two possessions, but then Jones came back with his third trey on an assist from McCoy to spark the game-changing 25-0 run.
- McCoy tied the game for the first time, 16-16, at 9:19, on a driving layup, and Whyte later took advantage of senior Fletcher Tynen's steal for a 26-16 lead with 4:18 left in the half.
- The Greyhounds missed their last 14 shot attempts along with two 1-and-1 situations at the charity stripe, as BU entered the locker room ahead, 30-16.
- After McCoy extended the lead to 33-16 with 18:09 remaining, the Greyhounds went on an 8-0 run helped by back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to single digits.
- Junior Ethan Brittain-Watts and Jones though responded with consecutive treys to prevent Loyola from ever getting any closer.
- Mathon's offensive rebound led to a McCoy 3-pointer at 11:30 for the Terriers' largest lead, 47-27.
- BU shot 52.4 percent in the second half to seal the victory.
