BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Alex Giannaros dropped a career-high 18 points, sophomore Caitlin Weimar added a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double, and the Boston University women's basketball team dispatched Navy 82-58 for its first Patriot League win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.

BU (5-7, 1-0 PL) started strong on offense, making nine of its first 15 shots and scoring a season-high 45 points in the first half. Navy (3-9, 0-2 PL) led for only 21 seconds the entire game, as the Terriers pulled away with a 25-12 second quarter. BU led by as much as 27 points midway through the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Sophie Beneventine also notched a career-high, dropping 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Junior Sydney Johnson appeared for the first time since Dec. 9 and registered 13 points off the bench, while classmate Maren Durant snagged 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Giannaros scored BU's first six points of the game, including two contested driving layups through the right block, to give BU an early 6-4 advantage.
  • Johnson checked in halfway through the frame and immediately nailed a left-elbow jumper for her first points.
  • Weimar converted a layup underneath at the 2:07 mark, but neither side scored the rest of the stanza as BU took a 20-16 edge into the second.
  • The Terriers started the second on an 11-1 run, featuring a three-pointer from Giannaros that Johnson followed with a steal near halfcourt for an uncontested layup. The spurt increased BU's edge to 31-17.
  • Coleman notched seven consecutive points for the Mids to get the score within 31-24 at the midway point.
  • At the 4:21 mark, BU had three consecutive and-one layups. Weimar and Beneventine drew contact on layups, while freshman Lauren Davenport sank a foul line jumper.
  • The Terriers finished with 25 points in the second quarter to take a 45-28 lead into halftime.
  • Beneventine and redshirt senior Emily Esposito teamed up for the Terriers' first four baskets in the third, with the final bucket giving BU its first 20-point lead of the day at 53-33.
  • The sophomore scored seven points in the third, capping the effort with a right-wing triple before the shot clock expired. The Terriers reached the 60-point plateau and headed to the fourth ahead 60-42.
  • Four different Terriers contributed to a 10-2 BU spurt to start the final frame. Johnson and Giannaros canned threes, while Weimar and Durant added buckets inside the arc, boosting the BU lead to 70-44 with 6:39 remaining.
  • After the game's final media timeout, sophomore Kelsi Mingo hit a right-corner three, followed up with Giannaros' final triple from the opposite end. Mingo's floater closed the scoring with 39 seconds left.
