Women's Basketball Stifles Colgate On The Road, 59-45

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Caitlin Weimar registered a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double, junior Sydney Johnson added 16 points and six assists, and the Boston University women's basketball program moved into sole possession of first place in the Patriot League with a 59-45 triumph over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at the Reid Athletic Center.

The Terriers (12-8, 8-1 PL) established a double-digit lead on the Raiders (3-18, 1-9 PL) with a 17-2 run in the second quarter, leading by 14 at halftime. Despite Colgate outscoring BU in the third quarter and pulling within eight in the fourth, the Terriers kept the home team at bay, shooting .444 from the field.

Weimar shot 50 percent from the field and also added four blocks. Junior Maggie Pina made a trio of three-pointers for 11 points. Classmate Maren Durant corralled a game-high 14 rebounds.

Alexa Brodie was the only Raider to score in double figures, collecting 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Johnson scored the game's first five points, burying a left-wing three-pointer and a right elbow jumper. However, Colgate forced four Terrier turnovers in a scoreless three-plus minutes, and turned it into a 7-5 lead halfway through the first.
  • Senior Chiara Tibbitt halted the drought with a baseline jumper, then Pina's three and Durant's contested layup re-established BU's lead, 12-9, with 2:33 on the clock.
  • Freshman Alex Giannaros' three with 29 seconds remaining put BU ahead after Jenna Paul's and-one basket, and made the difference in the Terriers' 15-14 edge after 10 minutes.
  • The Raiders took a 16-15 lead after Morgan McMahon's jumper, but Weimar fended off a defender to finish a layup 2:09 into the second quarter.
  • That basket ignited a 17-2 BU run over 6:17, increasing the Terrier advantage to 32-18. Weimar had eight points in the burst, all four coming on layups.
  • A free throw line jumper from Colgate's Tiasia McMillan halted a span of 10 straight BU points inside that extended spurt, but Durant skied up for a layup with nine seconds left to put BU on top 34-20 at halftime.
  • In the third, Colgate hit the first two shots from the field to cut its deficit to 35-24, but Weimar made two baskets and sandwiched a Giannaros hook shot to extend BU's edge to 41-24 with three minutes gone by.
  • BU had just two field goals in the final 3:41, but both came on three pointers from Pina. Morgan Frank had two baskets for the Raiders in the final minute of the period, but BU still held a 49-36 lead heading to the fourth.
  • With 6:35 to play, Brodie nailed a three to cut the Terrier edge to 51-43. BU responded with two free throws from Weimar, then Johnson hit the Terriers' first field goal of the quarter at the 5:33 mark to put BU back on top 55-43.
  • The final two buckets came from Johnson on layups, with her last one coming after she drove down the left lane and scooped it in with her left hand.
