Men's Basketball Falls at Navy, 83-71

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite all five starters scoring in double figures, the Boston University men's basketball team fell at Navy, 83-71, on Tuesday night.

Owning the Patriot League's lone win against a top-25 team this year in Virginia, the Midshipmen (9-4, 2-0 PL) drained 11 3-pointers and posted a 23-11 advantage in second-chance points to hand the Terriers (10-5, 1-1 PL) their first double-digit defeat of the season despite BU shooting 48 percent against a squad that was holding opponents to 58.7 ppg and 39.8 FG%.

Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week and graduate student Sukhmail Mathon led BU with a team-high 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while senior Walter Whyte tallied 11 points and six rebounds. Graduate student Javante McCoy added 12 points, as both seniors Fletcher Tynen and Jonas Harper posted 10 points apiece.

John Carter Jr. went 4-of-5 from behind the arc en route to 23 points alongside seven rebounds, while Tyler Nelson recorded 20 points. Daniel Deaver was one rebound shy of a double-double with 18 points, as Navy became the first opponent to shoot over 50 percent against BU at 31-of-59 (.525).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers started the game on fire, hitting their first five 3-pointers with Whyte contributing two of them, for a 21-14 lead with 11:30 left in the half.
  • Navy though held BU scoreless for the next 5:46 to mount a 17-0 run.
  • During the stretch, Christian Silva followed back-to-back 3-pointers from Carter with a bomb of his own before Austin Inge converted on his own steal at 6:38 for a 31-21 lead.
  • Carter flushed another trey for Navy's largest lead of the game, 38-26, with 4:02 left in the half.
  • Facing a 42-32 deficit with 1:20 left in the half, the Terriers scored the last six points with Harper earning a steal and layup to enter the locker room on a 10-2 run.
  • Mathon eventually tied the game at 16:07 (44-44) with two free throws and then at 15:03 (46-46) on a floater before Nelson retook the lead for good with a 3-pointer.
  • Owning a 65-61 lead with 7:48 remaining, Inge followed two Deaver free throws with a 3-pointer to create more distance.
  • Sophomore Calean Jones tried to mount a rally with a 3-pointer, but Carter drained his fourth trey to push the lead back to double digits, 78-68, at 3:25.
  • BU went the final three minutes without a made field goal for the loss.
