ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 9 Boston University men's ice hockey team suffered a 9-2 setback at No. 6 Michigan on Friday night at Yost Ice Arena.
The Terriers killed an early penalty to keep the game scoreless, but Michigan took advantage of back-to-back five-minute majors assessed against the Terriers to jump out to a 4-0 lead through 20 minutes before adding three goals in the middle stanza and two more in the third period.
Junior Luke Tuch and senior Ethan Phillips both lit the lamp for BU. Seniors Matt Brown and Sam Stevens provided the assists on Tuch's goal while Brown and senior Domenick Fensore each had helpers on Phillips' power-play strike.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With BU trailing 6-0, Tuch got BU on the board in the middle of the second period. The play began when Stevens got to a loose puck at the BU blue line and fired it out of the zone to Brown on the right wing. With only one defender back for the Wolverines, Brown one-touched it ahead to Tuch, and the duo entered the zone on a 2-on-0. After some back-and-forth passing, Brown eventually dished to Tuch for the tap-in goal.
- Phillips added a power-play marker in the final minute after Michigan was whistled for a five-minute major of its own, with Brown quickly finding his classmate between the circles for the goal that closed the scoring.
GAME NOTES
- Tuch has scored in each of the Terriers' two games this season and is now tied with Brown (1g, 2a) and freshmen Ryan Greene (2g, 1a), Lane Hutson (3a), and Jeremy Wilmer (1g, 2a) for the team lead in points with three.
- Brown, Stevens and Fensore also notched a point for a second straight game after they each found the back of the net on Oct. 1 against Bentley.
- Phillips became the eighth different Terrier to score a goal this season.
- The Terriers were excellent on faceoffs, going 45-27 at the dot.
- BU went 1-for-6 on the power play while Michigan was 3-for-8, with all three goals coming during that extended 5-on-3.
- Junior Drew Commesso made 12 saves and classmate Vinny Duplessis stopped 13 shots.
