ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Thanks to a three-goal second period and a stellar defensive effort in the final 20 minutes, the No. 9 Boston University men's ice hockey team earned a 3-2 win at No. 6 Michigan on Sunday night at Yost Ice Arena.
Junior
Cade Webber scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 1-1 and senior
Domenick Fensore followed with his first goal of the season to even the score at 2-2 before senior
Matt Brown's second goal of the season gave BU a lead it never relinquished.
Junior
Jay O'Brien assisted on the final two goals to complete a two-point night while Brown and Fensore each added an assist to have two-point nights as well. Freshmen
Ryan Greene and
Quinn Hutson had the helpers on Webber's goal.
Junior goaltender
Vinny Duplessis was fantastic in his first start of the season, making 31 saves. He stopped all 12 shots he faced over the final 20 minutes to preserve the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU was the better team from the opening whistle, as the Terriers heavily pressured Wolverines during the game's opening minutes.
- The Wolverines scored against the run of play, however, to take a 1-0 lead just 5:42 into the contest.
- Webber tied the game at 13:04 of the second stanza. A great breakout by BU had Hutson chip the puck into the Michigan zone for Greene, who picked up the puck with speed and drove to the right post. Webber crashed the crease and converted off Greene's feed for his first collegiate goal.
- Michigan regained its lead with 10:29 left in the middle frame on a power play. Duplessis made a great pad save as he sprawled across the crease, but a Wolverine player was in the perfect spot to knock home the rebound.
- Fensore scored a power-play goal of his own to even the contest just 1:17 later, as his writer from the top of the zone had eyes for the back of the net. Brown and O'Brien provided the helpers on Fensore's first goal of the season.
- Greene nearly gave BU its first lead of the contest with a nifty redirection, but Erik Portillo (26Â saves) came up with a great glove stop.
- Brown did put the Terriers in front with a power-play goal with 4:14 to go in the second. O'Brien drew two defenders to him along the half-wall and then fired a no-look pass to a wide-open Brown in front of the net. The senior made no mistake for his second goal of the season.
- The Terriers killed an early Michigan power play to keep the Terriers in front, and then Duplessis came up with two nice stops midway through the frame to ensure the score remained 3-2.
- Michigan pulled Portillo with just over a minute to play for an extra attacker, but Duplessis and the Terrier defense held strong with a combination of great goaltending and selfless shot blocking to secure the victory.
