Terriers Triumph Over Hawks For First Home Win, 73-45

BOSTON - Four Terriers scored in double figures, led by junior Caitlin Weimar's third double-double of the season, as the Boston University women's basketball team pulled away from Hartford in a 73-45 victory on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.

BU (2-2) secured its first win at home on the 2022-23 campaign, outscoring Hartford (0-3) 34-16 in the second half. The Terriers led for 38:59 of the 40 minutes, winning all four quarters.

Weimar notched 15 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks. Sophomore Lauren Davenport set career-highs with 12 points, five assists, and seven boards. Seniors Maggie Pina and Sydney Johnson added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Tatum Forbes paced the Hawks with 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists. As a team, Hartford shot 30 percent from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU jumped out to a 13-4 lead, with six points from Davenport layups, as the Hawks opened the game shooting just 2-of-11 from the field.
  • Hartford cut it to five before Johnson intercepted Forbes' pass, leading to a layup for freshman Sam Crispe that replenished the lead to seven, 15-8, with 1:17 left in the opening quarter.
  • With the score 18-13 in BU's favor early in the second, junior Sophie Beneventine nailed a jumper just inside the arc to ignite a 9-2 Terrier spurt over the course of 2:15.
  • The Hawks trimmed their deficit to 32-27 on Irene Primo's three-pointer with 2:09 until halftime, but the Terriers scored seven of the final nine points in the stanza, capped off by Beneventine's corner triple with under six seconds on the clock.
  • Elena Houghton made the first basket for Hartford to open the third, but BU would respond with an extended 14-0 run, featuring a pair of Pina three-pointers. The latter stretched the Terrier advantage to 53-31 at the 4:35 mark.
  • Johnson and Crispe set up a pick-and-roll to lead to a left-block layup for the rookie, then Pina sank a jumper off a Johnson outlet pass on the next possession for a 57-36 edge. Neither team scored in the final 2:02 of the third to keep it a 21-point lead heading to the fourth quarter.
  • Weimar made the first two BU buckets in the fourth on layups from Beneventine's assists, then junior Kelsi Mingo continued the strong play from the Class of 2024 with a nostalgic three-point play on a layup with 6:26 remaining, making it 64-40.
  • Freshman Anastasiia Semenova buried a straightaway three at the midpoint for a 67-43 Terrier lead.
  • BU's largest lead of the day, as well as the season, was 30, after Davenport found Crispe underneath the hoop to make it 73-43 with 1:34 remaining.
