Terriers' Comeback Not Enough In 65-61 Defeat At Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior Maggie Pina unloaded a season-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and junior Caitlin Weimar posted her fifth double-double of the season, but the Boston University women's basketball program could not overcome Saint Joseph's in a 65-61 loss on Thursday evening at the Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena.

Trailing by as much as 13 points in the second half and eight entering the fourth quarter, BU (4-3) shot over 46 percent in the frame and knotted the game at 61-61 with 51.7 seconds left. However, the Terriers were unable to make a shot from that point, and the Hawks (7-0) made four free throws to pull away to halt the Terriers' winning streak at four games.

Pina drained a trio of threes, giving her 151 in her BU career to move into ninth place in the Terrier record books. Weimar shot 7-of-13 from the floor, and had two blocks. Senior Sydney Johnson dropped nine points with six boards and six assists.

Talya Brugler scored a game-high 23 points on 50 percent shooting and added six caroms. Katie Jekot and Olivia Mullins had 13 and 11 points, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers hit five of their first seven shots, as Pina converted on a cutting layup and a corner three before the shot clock expired in the first 2:03.
  • Pina later found Weimar from the corner in the low paint in transition for a layup that put BU ahead 13-10 with 3:48 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Saint Joseph's would hold BU without a field goal the rest of the frame, however, and lead 17-15 after 10 minutes.
  • The Hawks' run would reach 10-0 before Durant cashed in on a turnaround layup at the 7:30 mark of the second quarter, cutting the Terriers' gap to 22-17.
  • Olivia Mullins' three-point gave Saint Joseph's its largest lead of the first half, 29-20, with 3:01 on the clock, but BU closed the stanza on a 7-2 run.
  • Sophomore Lauren Davenport drained a floater amidst three Hawks, drawing the foul for a three-point play, while Johnson drove in to find the bottom of the well with 1:27 until the break.
  • BU held Saint Joseph's without a point in the final 2:31 to trail 31-27 at the half, but the Hawks responded with five points in the first 1:26 of the third to go up eight.
  • Pina took a pass from Johnson and parked in the left corner for a triple to bring the Terriers within 40-34 with 6:39 to go in the third.
  • The Terriers limited the Hawks without a field goal in the final 4:21 of the quarter, hitting seven free throws to make it 51-43 in the home team's favor.
  • Weimar opened the fourth with a pair of layups to close the deficit to 51-47, coaxing a Saint Joseph's timeout 1:25 into the frame.
  • Two Johnson free throws with 6:50 left brought BU within 52-51 as part of a 15-3 extended run over the previous eight minutes.
  • Both teams traded three-point plays near the middle of the frame, as Brugler got a bucket to go plus a foul, while Pina nailed a straightaway triple on the other end.
  • Consecutive layups from Jekot and Brugler replenished a five-point Hawk advantage with 3:31 left.
  • Trailing 61-57 as the clock read 1:39, Pina drained a jumper just inside the arc from the right corner with 1:14 to go. She then snagged a rebound off a Brugler miss, then drew a foul to head to the line and make both free throws to tie it at 61.
  • Brugler made two foul shots on the other end, then an offensive foul on the Terriers returned the ball to Saint Joseph's. The Hawks missed both of the ensuing free throws, but BU couldn't find a basket on their next possession.

STATS
  • BU shot 36.8 percent in the game. After a 10-for-33 effort in the first half, the Terriers shot 11-for-24 (45.8 percent).
  • Saint Joseph's set season-lows with a .338 field goal percentage and .238 three-point percentage.
  • BU won the rebounding battle, 41-40, its fifth-consecutive game with 40-plus boards.
  • The Terriers had a 10-4 edge in fastbreak points, but Saint Joseph's led in points in the paint (34-32) and second-chance points (10-6).
  • Both sides combined for just eight points from bench players, and had 16 made free throws each.
