Men's Basketball to End Non-Conference Slate at UMass Lowell Wednesday Afternoon

BOSTON – Wrapping up the non-conference schedule, the Boston University men's basketball team will visit UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon with tip-off slated for 4 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center.

Following last week's 67-59 home win over Dartmouth, the 7-5 Terriers have earned back-to-back winning non-conference records for the first time since 2003-04 and 2004-05. They'll face a tough River Hawk squad that is 11-2 following a 77-75 overtime defeat at Rhode Island.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU is 3-3 in true road games this season, most recently posting a 72-70 win at Marist that was preceded by a hard-fought 81-75 loss at Notre Dame.
  • The Terriers are 3-0 this season against teams with ties to the America East, posting a 64-57 win at current member New Hampshire and victories against former members, Northeastern (72-63) and Hartford (102-66).
  • Currently in the top 15 for both points and rebounds all-time in the program record book, graduate student Walter Whyte leads BU at 14.5 ppg and 6.1 rpg with a team-high eight blocks.
  • Classmate Jonas Harper is the other Terrier in double figures at 10.0 ppg and just needs 83 more points to become the 43rd Terrier to hit the 1,000-point milestone.
  • Overall, nine Terriers have scored in double figures with senior Ethan Brittain-Watts third on the team at 8.7 ppg by shooting 42.9 percent from behind the arc.
  • BU is averaging 70.1 ppg and 41.5 FG% while holding opponents to 66.5 ppg and 40.9 FG%.
SCOUTING UMASS LOWELL
  • The River Hawks are 6-0 at home, holding five of the opponents below 60 points with with five victories decided by double digits and the sixth featuring a nine-point margin. The two losses came on the road at URI and at Rutgers (73-65).
  • UML's top four scorers all come from different schools. Currently with his third school following stints at Pitt and St. Bonaventure, 6-foot-9 forward Abdoul Karim Coulibaly averages 12.8 ppg and 8.6 rpg, while former La Salle transfer and 5-foot-10 guard Ayinde Hikim owns 10.1 ppg with 4.4 apg. Former USC Upsate transfer and 6-foot-3 guard Everette Hammond averages 12.8 ppg and is shooting over 44.0 3FG% alongside William & Mary transfer and 6-foot-1 guard Yuri Covington (9.6 ppg). 
  • UML ranks in the top 100 nationally in 19 statistical cateogires, including seventh in rebound margin (10.2), eighth in defensive FG% (36.6) and 12th in FG% (50.4).
  • The River Hawks are averaging 81.7 ppg and holding opponents to 63.3 ppg.
SERIES HISTORY
  • BU leads the all-time series, 6-3, having won the last three meetings.
  • The Terriers earned a 72-62 win last season despite committing 17 turnovers by shooting 41.4 FG% and holding UML to 35.6 FG% with a 47-32 advantage in rebounds.
  • BU is 2-2 all-time on the road, including an 87-82 loss in 2017 in their lone visit to the Costello Athletic Center. The Terriers shot 56.3 FG%, but UML shot 50.0 FG% and outscored BU off turnovers, 20-12, with a 28-4 advantage in made free throws.
UP NEXT
  • BU will return home and open Patriot League play on Friday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. against Navy.
  • The Midshipmen eliminated the Terriers in the Patriot League semifinals last March in overtime, 85-80.
