Record-Holders Emerge in Successful Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener

December 3, 2022

BOSTON – Multiple records and top-10 program finishes highlighted the start of the indoor track & field season at Boston University as the Terriers hosted the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday at the Track & Tennis Center.

In the 60m dash, four Terriers broke into the top-10 times in program history. Freshman Jada Smith led the charge on the women's side with a time of 7.61, good for first in the race and the third-fastest time in program history. Senior Noelani Phillips crossed the line in second (7.82) for the ninth-best BU time in the event.

On the men's side, a pair of freshmen took first and second in the 60m dash. Michael Onilogbo (6.82) and Logan Popelka (6.84) ran to the sixth and eighth best times in program history, respectively. Sophomore Leon Christian notably ran a 6.90, good for fourth in the race and the 11th-best time for the Terriers.

Christian did set the ninth-best time in Terrier history in the 200m dash with a 21.53. His performance earned him a first-place finish in the event.

A pair of program bests were set in the high jump with sophomore Asia Hamilton clearing 1.70m (5'7") and grad student Kasim Cisse clearing 2.05m (6'8.75"). Both set the 10th-best height in program history for the women and the men.

In the women's 300m race, Phillips was expected to make a statement and did just that. Her time of 37.44 not only earned her first place but set a new facility record at the TTC. She topped the previous record of 37.47 which was by former Harvard runner Gabrielle Thomas.

Phillips' 37.44 even set the school record for BU which was previously held by the meet's namesake Sharon Colyear-Danville. Phillips topped the old record by 0.11 seconds.

In the men's 300m race, Popelka dominated to take first with a time of 33.48. His time set a school record (previously 33.71) to rise to the top of the BU record book in his collegiate debut.

Freshmen continued to highlight the day with the women's weight throw. In her debut, Uchenna Uba threw for 15.30m (50'2") to place second in the event. Her throw was good for the eighth-best mark in program history.

In the 4x400m relay, BU posted a pair of top-three finishes. The women's relay team placed third (3:58.11) while the men's team took first (3:18:06).

Ending the day was sophomore Daisy Liljegren in the women's 5000m race. In a field that featured the ninth-best all-time collegiate record, Liljegren ran to a 16:20.18. She beat her own personal-best time set in last year's indoor season and notched the fourth-best time in program history.

The Terriers will be back in action on January 14, 2023 when they head across town for the Suffolk Invite.
