Men's Basketball to End Lengthy Road Trip at Marist Saturday Night

BOSTON – Ending a seven-game road trip, the Boston University men's basketball team will visit Marist on Saturday night with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • Graduate student Walter Whyte is currently the team leader in both scoring (13.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 rpg) while ranking 14th all-time at BU in points (1,369) and 10th in rebounds (707).
  • Classmate Jonas Harper is tied-for-ninth all-time at 179 career 3-pointers and is second in scoring this season with a personal-best 11.0 ppg.
  • Seven Terriers have led BU in scoring at least once this season with the following five accomplishing the feat for the first time ever after five total led in scoring last season – senior Ethan Brittain-Watts, graduate student Fletcher Tynen, junior Anthony Morales, senior Nevin Zink and freshman Otto Landrum.
  • Brittain-Watts (9.3 ppg) most recently had a career-high 19 points in Wednesday's 81-75 loss at Notre Dame to reach double figures for the fourth time after hitting the mark a combined four times over his first three years.
  • In five wins, BU is averaging 80.4 ppg and 47.8 FG%, and in the five losses, those averages drop to 60.0 ppg and 34.5 FG%, respectively.
  • Overall, the Terriers are holding opponents to 66.9 ppg and 41.1 FG% while ranking 58th nationally in turnover margin at +3.3.
SCOUTING MARIST
  • The Red Foxes are on a three-game win streak coming off wins against Maine (62-61) in London, Columbia (52-39) at home and on the road at Bucknell (60-54 OT).
  • Marist is 2-1 against the Patriot League with wins over the Bison on the road and at home against American (73-69) with Lehigh prevailing at home, 64-54.
  • 6-foot-11 center and Saint Michael's grad transfer Patrick Gardner owns a team-high 17.3 ppg and 7.8 rpg along with 11 blocks. 
  • The Red Foxes rank in the top 100 nationally in seven categories, including 3-point field goal attempts per game (25th - 27.5), defensive scoring (47th - 62.1 ppg), defensive field goal % (54th, 39.3 FG%) and blocks (56th, 4.5 bpg).
  • Offensively, Marist is averaging 61.3 ppg and 38.7 FG% while shooting 61.3 FT% at the charity stripe.
SERIES HISTORY
  • BU leads the all-time series that dates back to 1980, 4-2.
  • Last season at Case Gym, Marist finished regulation on an 18-7 run over the final 5:50 to send the game to OT and then went on 14-3 run down four to earn an 84-79 victory.
  • Eventual MAAC Rookie of the Year Jao Ituka burned the Terriers with 34 points on 11-of-14 FG and 11-of-13 FT. He transferred to Wake Forest over the summer.
  • In the Terriers' last visit to Marist, BU posted an 88-72 win in 2009, as the teams met for the first time since 1985.
UP NEXT
  • BU will host Dartmouth on Tuesday (Dec. 13) at 7 p.m.
  • Down one with 20 seconds left, Harper earned a steal and fastbreak layup to give BU the lead for good, as Javante McCoy ('22) made a pair of free throws to seal a 65-62 win.
  • BU won the last meeting at home in 2019, 78-76.
