Women’s Basketball Drops Road Tilt At American, 70-57

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Maren Durant notched 14 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore Caitlin Weimar tallied her second-straight double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, but the Boston University women's basketball team could not overcome American in a 70-57 loss on Saturday afternoon at Bender Arena.

BU (14-10, 10-3 PL) led for just 1:28 in the game, as the Eagles (15-7, 8-4 PL) shot 50 percent from the field and forced 22 Terrier turnovers. American led by as much as 23 points in the second half, though BU got to within 12 points in the final quarter.

Junior Liz Shean was the other Terrier in double figures with 10 points on two three-pointers. Classmate Sydney Johnson and freshman Alex Giannaros combined for nine of BU's 16 assists.

American's Jade Edwards led all scorers with 17 points, and posted a team-best eight rebounds with four steals. Emily Fisher and Karla Vres added 12 points each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers got off to a 9-5 lead after Durant's layup and Giannaros' three-pointer at the 6:48 mark, but the Eagles rocketed off an 11-0 run over 4:06 to go up 16-9.
  • Shean took a deflected feed from sophomore Sophie Beneventine and buried a left-wing triple to cut BU's deficit to 18-14 with 1:43 on the clock, but American later scored the final five points of the quarter to lead 25-16 after 10 minutes.
  • That Eagle burst extended to 9-0 until Weimar converted a transition layup off a pass from Johnson, cutting the gap to 29-18 with 7:37 remaining in the second.
  • With 4:06 left, senior Chiara Tibbitt sank a right-handed, turnaround jumper to get the Terriers with 33-22, but Emily Johns' ensuing nostalgic three-point play and Brown's layup gave American its largest lead at the time, 38-22.
  • After the scoreboard read 40-24 Eagles at halftime, Johnson skipped a bounce pass to junior Maggie Pina, who raced down the right lane for the layup.
  • From there, however, American increased their lead to 23 on a 12-3 spurt, with Emily Fisher's and-one layup making it 52-29 with 4:30 left in the third.
  • BU ended the third on an 8-2 run to pull within 59-42, capped with Durant's layup on a pass from Giannaros.
  • Durant converted again after working downhill from the top of the paint, and her bucket with 7:47 to play got BU within 60-46.
  • Five straight points from Fisher after that replenished the 19-point edge for American. BU's smallest gap the rest of the way was 67-55, when Shean drilled a three from the right side with 2:55 left.

GAME NOTES
  • BU shot close to 47 percent for the game, and made 50 percent or more of their shots in three out of the four quarters.
  • The Terriers won the rebounding battle, 33-22, and assisted on 16 of their 22 baskets.
  • American held a 27-9 advantage in points off turnovers and 23-14 in bench points.
  • BU's three-game road win streak ends at three games.
  • Weimar has recorded a double-double in consecutive games for the first time this season. In two games against American, she registered 26 points and 28 rebounds.
  • With two blocks to give her 113 in her career, Durant is one swat away from matching her former coach, Marisa Moseley, for sixth place on the Terriers' all-time list.
  • Shean is now shooting .505 on field goals, .519 from deep, and .880 at the foul line this season, all of which lead the guards.
  • American improves to 15-8 all-time in the series. The Terriers are 0-11 against the Eagles as the designated road team.

UP NEXT
  • The Terriers, who remain in a first-place tie with Holy Cross after the Crusaders' setback to Bucknell on Saturday, turn their attention to their first matchup of the year against Holy Cross next Wednesday (Feb. 16).
  • Opening tip is set for 6 p.m.
