Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Terriers Forced to Split Weekend Series after 5-2 Loss at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior Nadia Mattivi and senior Mackenna Parker each tallied third-period goals, but the Boston University women's ice hockey team suffered a 5-2 setback to Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

After BU (11-13-5, 10-8-4) snapped the Catamounts' nation-best nine-game win streak yesterday, Vermont (20-10-2, 17-71) rebounded by scoring the first four goals of the game on Saturday. Mattivi scored with 1:37 remaining in regulation with assists to sophomore Lacey Martin and junior Julia Nearis. After UVM regained its four-goal edge, Parker closed the scoring on a goal assisted by sophomore Catherine Foulem and senior Courtney Correia.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vermont held a 1-0 lead after one period thanks to a goal 5:00 into the proceedings.
  • Theresa Schafzahl then scored twice in the second stanza, including a shorthanded goal, to give her team a 3-0 lead before UVM added a fourth goal just 5:03 into the third.
  • Mattivi got BU on the board with her second goal of the weekend at 18:23 of the third. Nearis dished the puck to Martin at the right point and Martin saw Mattivi cutting towards the front of the net. Mattivi redirected Martin's inch-perfect pass past Jesse McPherson (23 saves) for her third goal of the season.
  • Schafzahl completed her hat trick with 56.4 seconds to play., but Parker responded by notching her 10th goal of the season less than 40 seconds later. Correia drove to the net and was knocked down, drawing a penalty in the process. Foulem continued the play by backhanding the puck to Parker, who ripped home a shot from between the circles.
GAME NOTES
  • Freshman Callie Shanahan made 28 saves, including a terrific blocker stop on a breakaway bid in the second period.
  • Mattivi finished the weekend with a goal in each game and three points total (2g, 1a).
  • Martin (1g, 2a) and Nearis (1g, 2a) both totaled three points for the weekend while Foulem and Correia had one point apiece in each tilt in Burlington.
