Colgate Pulls Away in Second Half to Upend Men's Basketball, 72-53

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Trying to remain in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Patriot League tournament, the Boston University men's basketball team fell at Colgate, 72-53, on Saturday afternoon.

Helped by a 10-3 advantage in made 3-pointers, the Raiders (17-11, 13-2 PL) extended their win streak to nine games, as the Terriers (19-10, 10-6) saw their current win streak halted at four contests. Facing a 30-27 halftime deficit, Colgate shot 55.6 FG% in the second half and held BU to 34.6 FG% to avenge January's 76-72 loss at Case Gym.

Graduate student Javante McCoy went 7-of-14 from the field for 16 points and added five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Classmate Sukhmail Mathon had a game-high eight rebounds with 11 points, while senior Walter Whyte recorded 10 points and five boards.

Nelly Cummings shot just 5-of-16 but went a perfect 6-of-6 at the line to finish with 18 points, while Jack Ferguson flushed four 3-pointers en route to 15 points and seven rebounds. Ryan Moffatt and Keegan Records combined for 22 points, 13 boards and seven assists to help the Raiders.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Mathon and McCoy hit back-to-back buckets for an early 8-4 lead, the Raiders scored nine straight with the help of 3-pointers from Moffatt and Cummings to pull ahead, 13-8, at 12:54.
  • Facing an 18-13 deficit with 9:17 left in the half, the Terriers chipped away and eventually retook the lead, 20-19, at 4:20 on senior Jonas Harper's free throw.
  • Mathon followed Whyte's 3-pointer with two free throws to give BU its largest lead of the game, 28-21, at 1:41, but Ferguson and Cummings both struck from behind the arc to pull within three (30-27) entering the locker room.
  • Harper started the second half with a 3-pointer, but Ferguson came ritht back with one of his own to spark a 21-4 run capped by Oliver Lynch-Daniels' bomb at 10:28.
  • Mathon briefly cut Colgate's lead to single digits, 48-39, at 9:27, but the Raiders scored eight straight and would build their advantage to as high as 21 (66-45) before finishing ahead by 19.
