Commesso Selected as Semifinalist for Richter Award
February 22, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - Sophomore Drew Commesso of the Boston University men's ice hockey team has been named a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goaltender in Division I men's hockey, the Hockey Commissioners Association announced on Tuesday.
Commesso, who is back in Boston after competing for the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, has been terrific for both his country and for the Terriers this year. In seven January starts before leaving for China, Commesso went 6-1-0 with a .946 save percentage and a 1.70 goals-against average. His save percentage was tops among all Hockey East netminders and seventh in the nation. He recorded his first NCAA shutout with a 35-save performance against Vermont on Jan. 22. Commesso also recorded a pair of 36-save victories, one of which was in this past Sunday's victory over No. 17 Providence. He also made 32 saves on Jan. 25 to help BU defeat then-No. 9/8 UMass in Amherst for the second time this season.
A native of Norwell, Mass., Commesso went 7-1-1 in his last nine starts with the Terriers, posting a 1.63 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage. Overall, Commesso sports a .915 save percentage and a 2.48 goals-against average.
Commesso made history at the Olympics when he became the youngest goaltender to start for the U.S. Men's Olympic Team. He was great in that debut appearance, stopping all 29 shots he saw in an 8-0 win over China. Commesso then made 24 saves in his only other start, a 3-2 win over Germany that helped the U.S. finish undefeated in preliminary-round play. He finished the tournament with a .963 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average; both marks ranked second among all goalies who made at least two appearances.
BU will return to the ice on Friday, Feb. 25, when the No. 13/14 Terriers travel to Chestnut Hill to begin a home-and-home series with Boston College.
