Terriers Drop Road Tilt At Lafayette, 58-52

EASTON, Pa. – Junior Sydney Johnson scored a team-high 16 points to pair with five assists, junior Maren Durant dropped added 10 points with 14 rebounds, but the Boston University women's basketball team's comeback at Lafayette fell short in a 58-52 loss on Wednesday evening at the Kirby Athletic Center.

Down by as many as 13 points with less than seven minutes to go, BU (15-12, 11-5 PL) clawed back to get within 53-49 as the clock counted down to 1:19 in the fourth quarter. However, the Leopards (10-16, 6-10 PL) held on to preserve the win on their Senior Day.

Johnson also had three steals on her ledger, while Durant had three assists and two steals. Seven different Terriers scored in the contest.

Makayla Andrews paced all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Jessica Booth had 15 points, while Makaila Wilson added 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Johnson drilled a left-wing three-pointer on BU's first shot of the game, but Lafayette proceeded to go on a 9-0 run over a span of seven minutes.
  • After falling behind 13-6, BU kept the Leopards off the scoreboard for the final 1:50 of the quarter. Senior Chiara Tibbitt found Durant underneath for two, then Johnson picked off a Lafayette pass at midcourt and laid it in to cap the score at 13-10 after one.
  • The Terriers knotted the game at 15 after Tibbitt made a straightaway jumper just inside the arc, then junior Liz Shean buried a three at the 7:09 mark of the second.
  • Lafayette scored the next seven points to go ahead 22-15 as Booth hit a three, then Andrews made a pair of jumpers.
  • BU got to within one possession on two instances, including a Weimar layup off Johnson's feed with 2:54 left and Giannaros' driving layup 50 seconds later, but Makaila Wilson hit one from the corner to give the Leopards a 26-22 halftime advantage.
  • Junior Maggie Pina made a bucket near the foul line to open up the third-quarter scoring, but Abby Antognoli made two consecutive baskets right after, then Booth countered a BU free throw with her own jumper to replenish Lafayette's advantage to 32-25 with 6:32 left in the frame.
  • Andrews racked up a conventional three-point play and nailed a hook shot to increase the Leopard edge to 41-31, but back-to-back layups from sophomore Caitlin Weimar pulled BU within 41-35 after three quarters.
  • After Wilson's jumper one minute into the fourth, Naomi Ganpo got her shot to fall while drawing a foul on Weimar, and hit the free throw to make it 46-35 with 7:54 to play.
  • Down 48-35 with 6:12 remaining, Johnson found Durant for a layup that ignited an 8-1 Terrier run over three minutes. Johnson capped the burst by speeding through the lane and making a layup with 3:38 on the clock, pushing the Terriers within six.
  • Her finger roll layup with 2:32 remaining made it 52-47 Lafayette. Wilson went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe, then Durant snagged an offensive rebound and put back the ball to cut the deficit to 53-49 with 1:19 to go.
  • BU had a chance to make it a one-possession game with less than 30 seconds to play, but a three-pointer didn't fall, and Lafayette made five foul shots the rest of the way.
