CLEMSON, S.C. – After advancing to the Clemson Classic championship game with an 8-0 run-rule victory over four-time defending NEC champion Saint Francis, the Boston University softball team dropped a 7-3 decision to the No. 9 nationally-ranked and host Tigers on Saturday evening.
The Terriers (5-8) collected seven hits against the Red Flash (6-7), who were held to just three hits of their own by junior
Lizzy Avery (3-4) in her first career solo shutout. BU then became the first opponent to record 10+ hits against Clemson (11-3) in the doubleheader split.
Senior
Nicole Amodio led the offense with a pair of homers, first launching a grand slam in the first game and then a solo shot in the night cap for five total RBIs. She was one of three to earn three hits on the day with sophomore
Kayla Roncin reaching home plate three times against Saint Francis before adding another run against the Tigers.
Junior
Caitlin Coker went 3-of-4 against Clemson with a pair of doubles to try to help BU pull off its second upset of the season following an earlier win at then-No. 13 Georgia. Freshman
Tyesha Williams earned two hits in the first game, and sophomore
Kate Pryor collected two of her own in the second.
Avery tallied four strikeouts and used 70 total pitches for BU's second shutout of the weekend. She kept the Tigers at bay for two innings with just one run allowed before they put up five in the third. Junior
Allison Boaz entered the circle in the fourth and helped BU avoid its second run-rule loss to Clemson by allowing just one run over the last three innings.
