BOSTON – The Boston University women's ice hockey team took on No. 5/4 Northeastern in the consolation game of the 43rd Beanpot on Tuesday afternoon at Matthews Arena and the Huskies posted a 3-0 win on their home ice.
Redshirt senior Maureen Murphy scored once in each period for a hat-trick performance and junior Gwyneth Philips stopped all 14 shots she faced for the shutout.
Making her first collegiate start, senior
Nicole McGuigan turned in a 34-save effort for the Terriers, who move to 10-12-5 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU held the Huskies to just four shots in the opening period but entered the first intermission with a 1-0 deficit.
- A tic-tac-toe play off a power play opened the scoring as Murphy was the beneficiary at the foot of the left circle at the 11:56 mark of the first.
- Murphy doubled the lead when she caused a turnover and got ahead of the defense before roofing a backhand past McGuigan at 7:16 of the middle stanza.
- Northeastern used another power play to create a three-goal cushion as Skylar Fontaine found Murphy in the right circle, where she snapped a shot to the back of the net to complete her hat trick with 17:41 left in regulation.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers had four power-play chances but were unable to capitalize on any of them.
- Northeastern went 2-for-5 with the player advantage.
- Sophomores Madison Cardaci and Tamara Giaquinto each had a game-high three blocked shots.
