Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 16 Terriers Edged at UConn, 3-1, in Hockey East Quarterfinals

HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior Domenick Fensore got the Terriers within one late in the third period with his fifth goal of the season, but UConn added an empty-netter to defeat the No. 16 Boston University men's ice hockey team, 3-1, in a Hockey East quarterfinal contest on Saturday night at XL Center.

Fensore's power-play strike with 6:59 remaining in regulation made it a 2-1 game and led to a furious rally for an equalizer before UConn sealed the win with 10 seconds to play. The Terriers outshot the Huskies, 20-8, over the final 20 minutes.

Juniors Robert Mastrosimone and Jay O'Brien assisted on Fensore's marker, which came on the Terriers' only power play of the contest. Fensore finished the year with a team-high 31 points thanks to five goals and a team-best 26 assists.

Sophomore Drew Commesso was terrific for the Terriers, stopping 33 shots. BU (19-13-3) outshot UConn (19-15-0), 39-36, for the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Commesso was sharp throughout the first 20 minutes, but UConn took a 1-0 lead into the intermission thanks to a Vladislav Firstov redirection in front of the net.
  • The Terrier netminder made a sensational blocker save on a breakaway bid midway through the second stanza to keep the deficit at 1-0, but the Huskies added to their lead at the 9:34 mark on a scramble at the crease.
  • BU had a good push to start the third, with junior Matt Brown denied on the Terriers' best chance of the first 5:00.
  • Junior Sam Stevens had a couple good chances at the right post, but Darion Hanson (38 saves) held strong to keep the Huskies' lead at 2-0.
  • Fensore got the Terriers within one with 6:59 remaining in regulation with a power-play goal. Mastrosimone won a battle behind the net and got the puck to O'Brien, who quickly slid it to Fensore. The Hobey nominee uncorked a rocket past Hanson.
  • Gallagher nearly evened the score after a nifty move in the offensive zone, but Hanson gloved down the attempt.
  • BU pulled Commesso in favor of an extra attacker with 1:53 remaining in regulation and generated a few good looks, but the Huskies eventually cleared the zone in the waning seconds and scored into the vacant cage to create the 3-1 final.
GAME NOTES
