WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Christian Quadrino matched a career high with four goals and senior Timmy Ley dished out a career-best four assists as part of a six-point afternoon to lead the No. 14/13 Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 16-10 win at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.
BU never trailed as the Terriers improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League. Five different Terriers - Quadrino, Ley, senior Jake Cates, junior Vince D'Alto and junior Louis Perfetto - recorded at least two goals, with Cates completing a hat trick. Quadrino added an assist to finish with a career-best five points.
Junior LSM Roy Meyer joined D'Alto with a team-high two caused turnovers, gathered three ground balls and scored his first collegiate goal in another terrific effort. Seniors Matt Baugher and Matt Hilburn also found the back of the net on Saturday, with Baugher scoring for the fourth straight game.
Senior Matt Garber was terrific in the cage for BU, as he made 15 saves, including six in a foggy first quarter, while only allowing eight even-strength markers. Junior Conor Calderone was great at the faceoff X, going 18-for-28 with five ground balls. Both teams dealt with foggy and rainy conditions for a majority of the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Garber made three saves early in the contest to keep the Crusaders off the board and allow Quadrino and Cates to stake the Terriers a 2-0 lead through 15 minutes.
- Dean DiNanno cut the BU lead to 2-1 just 1:26 into the second stanza, but Ley connected with Quadrino just 34 seconds later to regain the Terriers' two-goal advantage.
- Garber made a great save on a Crusader chance in transition to keep Holy Cross from making it a one-goal contest.
- Ley then tallied an unassisted marker to make it 4-1 before answering a Holy Cross strike to make it 5-2.
- After Holy Cross once again cut the Terrier lead to two, Quadrino found Perfetto for a goal to give BU a 6-3 edge at halftime.
- The teams traded goals to begin the third quarter before BU went on a 3-0 run during a span of just over 5:00. Cates, Baugher and D'Alto had the Terrier markers during that run that pushed the BU lead to 10-5.
- Holy Cross made it 10-6 entering the fourth quarter and then answered a Perfetto goal with two straight of its own to cut the BU lead to 11-8 with 8:21 remaining in regulation.
- The Terriers responded with four straight goals in a span of 2:57 to put the game out of reach, with D'Alto, Quadrino, Meyer and Hilburn all finding the back of the net to make it 15-8 with 2:37 to play.
- Meyer's first collegiate strike came after he forced a turnover and then collected a Perfetto pass at the crease.
- BU and Holy Cross combined for three man-up goals over the final 48 seconds to create the 16-10 final, with Cates' third goal of the game closing the scoring for the Terriers.
