DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Seeded No. 10, the Boston University men's basketball team is set to open the 2022 Roman College Basketball Invitational (CBI) against No. 7 UNC Greensboro with tip-off set for 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Ocean Center.

Fans will be able to watch via subscription the first two rounds of the tournament on FloHoops with ESPN2 broadcasting both the semifinals and title game. A free audio stream of Doug Brown and Brian Maurer's call will be available at GoTerriers.com/tsrn.

POSTSEASON HISTORY
  • The Roman CBI marks the Terriers' 18th postseason bid (8-NCAA, 6-NIT, 2-CBI, 2-CIT) and the fifth under 11th-year head coach Joe Jones (2022 CBI, 2020 NCAA, 2016 CIT, 2014 NIT, 2013 CIT). BU claimed the automatic NCAA berth in 2020 by winning the Patriot League tournament title, but the event was canceled due to the pandemic.
  • The Terriers are 5-16 all-time, highlighted by a 1959 NCAA Elite Eight appearance in which they lost by four to a Jerry West-led West Virginia.
  • BU is 1-3 under Joe Jones, last going 1-1 in the 2016 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (now known as the Basketball Classic). The Terriers posted a 69-66 win at Fordham before dropping an 83-72 decision at NJIT.
  • BU last competed in the Roman CBI in 2010, opening with a 96-78 win at defending champion Oregon State. The Terriers followed with a 91-89 OT home win vs. Kenneth Faried and Morehead State before falling at eventual champion VCU in the semifinals (88-75). BU, MSU and VCU all reached the NCAA tournament the following season.
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU has only previously faced three of the 15 teams participating in the Roman CBI – Northern Colorado, Ohio and UNC Wilmington.
  • The Terriers are visiting the Sunshine State for the first time since going 2-1 in the Jacksonvile Classic back in November. They hoisted the Jax Bracket trophy following wins over Northern Illinois and Sam Houston State before coming up short in OT at Duval Bracket champion Florida State, 81-80.
  • The Terriers most recently suffered heartbreak in the Patriot League tournament with an 85-80 overtime loss at No. 2-seeded Navy. Graduate student Javante McCoy flushed a pair of 3-pointers during the final two possessions of regulation to force OT.
  • McCoy became the second Terrier in program history to earn multiple All-Tournament Team honors from a conference after Tunji Awojobi ('97) was recognized three times. McCoy averaged 28.0 ppg in two games and now leads BU at 17.7 ppg.
  • BU features three active 1,000+ point scorers with McCoy No. 4 all-time in the program record book with 1,906 points. Senior Walter Whyte sits at No. 19 with 1,221 points, while graduate student Sukhmail Mathon is No. 33 at 1,043 points.
  • Sunday's game will mark Mathon's 150th career appearance in the scarlet and white. He ranks No. 3 all-time at BU at 855 career rebounds with his 337 boards this season ranking No. 4, just five shy of BU Hall of Famer James Garvin's 342 claimed rebounds in 1972-73.
  • Overall, BU has had 10 men score in double figures this season. Junior Ethan Brittain-Watts hit the mark for the third time at Navy with a career-tying 13 points.
  • Senior and two-time Defensive All-PL honoree Jonas Harper earned three steals in each of his last two games.
  • The Terriers are averaging 71.3 ppg and 45.9 FG% while holding opponents to 67.4 ppg and 44.8 FG%.
SCOUTING UNC GREENSBORO
  • UNCG is making its sixth postseason appearance in seven years after reaching the NCAAs in 2021 and 2018. Team advanced to the 2016 Roman CBI quarterfinals and 2019 NIT Second Round.
  • The Spartans were the No. 6 seed in the Southern Conference and came up just short in the quarterfinals to No. 3 Samford, 66-64.
  • UNCG is 9-5 at home with an 8-9 mark on the road. Like BU, team also competed in Florida in Nov., posting 1-2 mark with OT losses to UMass (93-90) and FIU (74-71) alongside a 60-58 win vs. Green Bay.
  • Spartans rank 34th nationally in rebound margin (5.4) and 44th in scoring defense (64.8 ppg). They also rank 100th in defensive FG% (41.8) while shooting 43.1 FG%.
  • 2017 A-10 Rookie of the Year (Richmond) and Cal State Bakersfield transfer De'Monte Buckingham, a 6-foot-4 guard, owns All-SoCon 3rd Team honors at 12.2 ppg and 6.4 rpg with 62 3FGs. 6-foot-10 forward Bas Leyte has 9.3 ppg and 5.9 rpg.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Teams are meeting for the first time in program history.
  • BU will be seeking its first win against the Southern Conference since posting a win over then-member Davidson in 1956-57.
UP NEXT
  • Sunday's winner will advance to Monday's quarterfinals against either No. 2 Middle Tennessee or No. 15 Cal Baptist with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
  • The Terriers have never faced either school.
