BOSTON – Seeking its second automatic NCAA berth in three years, the No. 3-seeded Boston University men's basketball team will open the 2022 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Championship on Thursday night against No. 6 Loyola Maryland at Case Gym with the quarterfinal matchup set for a 7 p.m. start time. There will be free admission for BU students, faculty and staff with a Terrier Card.

The Terriers will enter the tournament with 20+ wins for the first time since posting a 22-9 (15-3 PL) record in 2013-14. They went 11-7 in conference play and will try to match the 2019-20 squad's (18-13, 12-6 PL) efforts in raising the trophy as the No. 3 seed. While BU went 9-3 after starting league play at 2-4, Loyola finished 3-9 to earn the No. 6 seed. The teams will meet in a conference tourney for the third time at Case Gym after BU prevailed in the 2017 PL First Round (64-60) and 2019 PL Quarterfinals (71-63).

CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HISTORY
  • Avoiding the first round for the seventh time in nine years, BU is 52-34 (.605) all-time in conference tourneys and 9-7 in the PL with a pair of title game appearances (2014, 2020).
  • The Terriers are 25-15 (.625) all-time in quarterfinal games and 7-3 in home PL matchups, most recently eliminating Lehigh in the 2021 PL first round.
  • They last hosted a quarterfinal game in 2020, beating Navy (69-63), and will try to avoid the fate of the 2015-16 team that lost to No. 6 American, 69-64.
  • Outside becoming the first team in both program and Patriot League history to win a title as the No. 3 seed, BU has not had a lot of success in the No. 3 slot, posting a 10-10 record with a 6-5 mark in quarterfinal meetings.
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The PL announced All-Conference honors Monday afternoon with graduate student Sukhmail Mathon earning BU's first PL Player of the Year award and sixth overall Conference Player of the Year honor after Darryl Partin ('12) was honored by the America East in 2012. Mathon was joined by classmate Javante McCoy (1st) and senior Walter Whyte (3rd) in receiving All-PL accolades while also collecting his second All-Defensive recognition.
  • Mathon (15.1 ppg, 10.3 rpg) ranks eighth nationally with 16 double-doubles and third in offensive rebounds per game at 3.90. His 319 rebounds are the eighth most in the NCAA and seventh most in BU history.
  • McCoy has posted 20+ points eight times this season, including each of the last two contests, to rank 95th nationally at 17.1 ppg. He ranks No. 4 all-time at BU with 1,850 career points and No. 10 in assists at 370.
  • Whyte (12.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg) ranks eighth in PL-only games at 5.7 rpg and 17th in scoring at 12.4 ppg. He was one rebound shy of earning three double-doubles in the 2020 PL tournament and currently ranks 20th all-time at BU at 1,202 points.
  • McCoy, Whyte and senior Jonas Harper (7.4 ppg), a two-time All-PL Defensive Team honoree, have all flushed at least 41 3-pointers this season.
  • BU is 11-0 this season when outscoring an opponent's bench this season. In total, the Terriers have had 10 players score in double figures at least once this season.
  • The Terriers are 10-4 at home this season with a 6-3 mark in conference play. They've won their last three games, including the last two by 16+ points after pulling out a 75-74 win over Army. Loyola handed BU a 66-58 loss back on Jan. 7.
  • BU is averaging 70.9 ppg and  45.5 FG% while holding opponents to 67.0 ppg and 44.7 FG%.
SCOUTING LOYOLA MARYLAND
  • Despite being the No. 9 seed last season, the Greyhounds advanced all the way to the PL title game, earning a win at No. 1 Navy and No. 4 Army before eventually falling to No. 2 Colgate.
  • The Greyhounds are 4-12 away from home this season, collecting wins at BU, Lehigh and Fairfield while also earning a victory over South Carolina State on a neutral court.

  • Speaking of January, Thursday's contest will mark the the first time the teams will meet outside that month since BU won the quarterfinal game in 2019.
  • In the Terriers' 66-58 home loss to Loyola, they shot 33.9 FG% against the Greyhounds' 52.9 FG% but bounced back in the rematch to shoot 43.4 FG% and limit the Greyhounds to 36.0 FG%.
  • While BU has won the two previous PL tournament meetings, Loyola did eliminate the Terriers in the 2013 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament when BU was still in the America East and Loyola was in the MAAC.
UP NEXT
  • With a win over Loyola, BU would either host No. 10 American or visit No. 2 Navy in the semifinals on Sunday (March 6) at 2 or 4 p.m. Those two teams will face off in Annapolis on Thursday as well at 7 p.m.
