No. 20 Terriers Cruise to 18-6 Win at Colgate in PL Opener

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Seven different Terriers scored at least two goals, led by senior Timmy Ley's four, as the No. 20 Boston University men's lacrosse team cruised to an 18-6 win at Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium.

BU is now 4-0 for the first time since 2017 with the victory in its Patriot League opener. The Terriers never trailed, jumping out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter. They also held Colgate scoreless for the final 19:05 of the contest.

Ley became the sixth player in program history to record 100 points as a Terrier thanks to his six-point afternoon. He now has 105 points (81g, 24a) in his impressive career.

Junior Vince D'Alto recorded seven points thanks to three goals and four assists while classmate Louis Perfetto recorded a career-best four assists in addition to two goals for a six-point effort. Senior Jake Cates notched two goals and added three assists for five points while senior Matt Baugher, sophomore Tommy Bourque and senior Matt Hilburn scored two goals apiece.

Senior Jett Dziama recorded his first goal of the season and also set a new career high with six ground balls. Junior Conor Calderone won 13 faceoffs and collected a career-high nine ground balls in the win. Junior Roy Meyer matched his career high for the second straight week with four caused turnovers in addition to gathering five ground balls. Senior Matt Garber made 15 saves in another impressive performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Cates opened the scoring thanks to a hard-nosed spin dodge that allowed him to get to the front of the cage before he took a hit as he finished.
  • Ley connected with Hilburn for a 2-0 lead, but Colgate responded too make it a 2-1 game.
  • That was as close as Colgate got the rest of the game, as Bourque began a 3-0 run before Ley and D'Alto each found the back of the net for a 5-1 advantage.
  • After another Colgate goal, Perfetto became the sixth different Terrier to score in the first quarter to make it a 6-2 game entering the second stanza.
  • Cates and Hilburn each notched their second goal of the day to extend the lead to 8-2.
  • Colgate reduced the deficit to five, but Baugher and Ley countered with back-to-back goals to make it a 10-3 score at halftime. Dziama earned a hockey assist on Ley's marker, as he gathered the ground ball off the faceoff and eventually found D'Alto, who in turn fed Ley for the finish at the right post.
  • D'Alto wowed the crowd with a terrific behind-the-back goal to open the scoring in the third quarter.
  • The Raiders responded to make it 11-4 and had a chance to cut into the BU lead even more with a 6-on-3 EMO, but the Terriers killed all three penalties to keep Colgate from gathering any further momentum.
  • Ben Trumble did make it an 11-5 game midway through the quarter, but a terrific individual effort from Dziama pushed the lead back to seven when he caught a pass at midfield and then ran all the way to the cage before firing home his first goal of the season.
  • Rory Connor made it an 11-6 contest with 4:05 on the clock, but that was the last time Colgate found the back of the net.
  • Ley tallied his final two goals of the afternoon late in the third quarter, with Perfetto following Ley's last marker with his second of the day just 10 seconds later to give BU a 14-6 lead entering the fourth frame.
  • D'Alto's second strike of the day pushed the lead to 15-6, with Bourque and Baugher following that with their respective second goals of the game to conclude the scoring.

  • Ley's 105 points has him in sixth place all-time.
  • He extended his goal scoring streak to 26 games while D'Alto (19 games) and Perfetto (21 games) extended their respective point streaks.
