BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior Louis Perfetto dished out a career-high six assists as part of his career-best eight-point day to help lead the No. 16 Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 14-9 win at Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.
BU improved to 6-0 in the Patriot League and 9-3 overall, marking the first time that the Terriers have won six games in conference play. BU also earned its first-ever win at Loyola.
Perfetto tallied six of his eight points in the second half as BU scored five straight goals in in the third quarter as part of an 8-1 second-half run.
Senior Timmy Ley became the third Terrier in program history to score 100 career goals, joining Jack Wilson (108) and James Burr (153) on that elite list. Ley finished the day with three goals, joining junior Vince D'Alto as Terriers with a hat trick. D'Alto also added an assist for a four-point afternoon while sophomore Tommy Bourque factored on both the first goal and the final goal of the game for BU, tallying one goal and one assist.
Nine different BU players scored a goal, with senior Matt Baugher, junior Conor Calderone, sophomore James Corcoran and junior Thomas Niedringhaus all finding the back of the net. Senior Matt Hilburn recorded one of the Terriers' nine assists on the day. Not only did Calderone score, but he also won 10 faceoffs and finished with five ground balls.
Junior Roy Meyer, making his second career start at close defense, recorded three caused turnovers and two ground balls. He set a new single-season program record for caused turnovers, as he finished the day with 36, two better than Reece Eddy's 34 in 2019.
Senior Matt Garber was outstanding in the cage, stopping 13 shots, including three in the fourth quarter to ensure that the Terriers maintained their lead.
- Garber made the first save of the game, but Loyola scored in transition after the first BU possession of the contest to take a 1-0 lead.
- Bourque evened the score in transition as he caught a pass from Hilburn and ripped home a shot from just inside the box.
- That was the only other goal of the first half as each goalie made five saves in the opening 15 minutes.
- D'Alto gave BU its first lead of the game at 10:02 of the second quarter when he lowered his shoulder on a defender, knocked him to the ground and then scored.
- Ley pushed the lead to 3-1 less than two minutes later off a feed from Perfetto.
- BU called timeout after Loyola took a 4-3 lead and scored immediately after the break as Calderone won the faceoff forward, picked up the ground ball and scored his second goal of the season.
- D'Alto gave the Terriers a 5-4 lead with 2:13 to play in the second quarter thanks to some aggressive riding. He forced a turnover and Perfetto picked up the ground ball. Before being pushed out of bounds, Perfetto sent a one-handed pass to D'Alto, who fired home his second goal of the game.
- The Greyhounds answered with a goal of their own out of a timeout to send the teams to halftime tied at 5-5.
- Loyola scored in transition to take a 6-5 lead.
- Ley tied the score with his 100th career goal. It was a beauty, as he went BTB at the left pipe off a pass from D'Alto.
- That began a 5-0 run for the Terriers, as Baugher, Perfetto, Quadrino and Niedringhaus all scored to push the Terrier lead to 10-6. Perfetto assisted on three of the four goals he did not score during that stretch.
- Loyola cut the deficit to 10-7, but Perfetto found D'Alto with an outstanding skip pass to retake a four-goal lead entering the fourth quarter.
- Corcoran and Ley then opened the fourth frame with goals to push the Terrier advantage to 13-7.
- The Greyhounds responded with two goals of their own to get within four again with 8:49 remaining in regulation, but Garber and the BU defense stepped up to hold Loyola scoreless the rest of the way.
- Bourque connected with Perfetto with 1:42 to go to seal the game.
