BOSTON - The Boston University men's ice hockey team announced its leadership group for the 2022-23 season on Saturday at its team banquet.
Rising senior Domenick Fensore will serve as captain while classmates Case McCarthy and Jay O'Brien were named assistant captains. This is the first year that all three Terriers will wear a letter on their jerseys.
Fensore was one of the best defensemen in the country this past season. The Hobey Baker nominee and Hockey East Second Team All-Star led all league blue liners with 26 assists and his 31 points ranked second among Hockey East defenders. Fensore tallied a point in nine of his last 10 games, including an assist on the Beanpot-winning goal. He has yet to miss a game in his three-year career, playing in all 85 games. He has recorded 55 points on 10 goals and 45 assists as a Terrier.
McCarthy had a terrific junior campaign and was one of the Terriers' most consistent defensemen. In 26 games this past season, McCarthy scored a career-high five goals and added nine assists for a career-best 14 points. He was also named Hockey East Defender of the Month for November. In 70 career games, McCarthy has scored eight goals and added 20 assists for 28 points.
O'Brien was an impact player for the Terriers when he was in the lineup, totaling career highs in goals (10), assists (12) and points (22) in 24 games played. He averaged a point per game over his last 10 appearances, including a three-point effort (2g, 1a) at Providence on Feb. 10. In two seasons with the Terriers, O'Brien has notched 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points.
In addition to announcing next season's leadership group, the team recognized its award winners for the 2021-22 campaign. Fensore, who won the Ed Carpenter Award by virtue of leading the Terriers in points, also received the Clifford P. Fitzgerald Scholarship Award, which is presented annually to the outstanding rising junior or senior defenseman, as well as the George V. Brown Most Valuable Player Award. Alex Vlasic, who recently became the 91st Terrier to play in the NHL, also earned the Clifford P. Fitzgerald Scholarship Award.
Sam Stevens was selected as the Most Improved Player after he set new career highs with five goals and two assists for seven points. The talented center also won 54.2% of his faceoffs this season, including a highlight-reel play when he scored directly off a faceoff.
Captain Logan Cockerill was honored with the Bennett McInnis Award for Spirit, which is given to the player who best typifies the spirit of a Boston University hockey player both on and off the ice. This was the second straight season that Cockerill took home that award. Additionally, Cockerill claimed the Iron Terrier Award for a second consecutive season; that is awarded to the player who most exemplifies character, strength, dedication and discipline in the weight room and off-ice training. The two-year captain collected five goals, six assists for 11 points, including a team-high three game-winning goals, in 2021-22.
Ty Amonte earned the Friends/Albert Sidd Unsung Hero Award, which is given to the player who contributes much during his four years and does not garner the proper recognition. Amonte battled injuries throughout his Terrier career, but the two-year assistant captain continued to make an impact on the squad even when not in the lineup.
Cade Webber received the Regina Eilberg Scholarship Award, which is presented to the player who combines the highest standards of Terrier athletics and academic performance. Webber tallied two assists and led all BU blue liners as a plus-7. He has also been terrific in the classroom during his two years at BU and was selected as an AHCA All-American Scholar this past July.
Max Kaufman received the Travis Roy Award, a new award that is presented to the Boston University hockey player that best exemplifies who Travis Roy was as a person; someone of great character who is a class citizen and a great teammate. Kaufman was an assistant captain for both of his seasons as a Terrier. On the ice this year, Kaufman totaled six goals and five assists for 11 points.
