Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Terriers Fall To Leopards, 16-13

BOSTON – Freshman Matty Spaeth scored four goals, and redshirt junior Teagan Lucchese added three assists, but the Boston University women's lacrosse team fell short against Lafayette in a 16-13 decision on Saturday evening at Nickerson Field.

The Terriers outscored the Leopards 11-10 in the final three quarters, but the visitors jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter and kept BU from climbing within one goal the rest of the way.

Junior Claire Gola filled the stat sheet with three goals, three ground balls, four caused turnovers, and four draw controls. Classmate Jennifer Barry controlled a season-high 16 draws and moved into second place all-time in program history in career draw controls.

Clare Culligan scored a game-best five goals, while Olivia Cunningham tallied four goals and an assist. Lexie Coldiron made 10 saves in net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Tobey Tick's free position goal at the 11:26 mark was sandwiched in between four Lafayette goals in the first nine minutes of the contest.
  • Spaeth notched her first goal by shaking off a defender by the left of the 12-meter fan and tucking her shot in the lower-left corner.
  • Sophomore Olivia Kingsborough scored her first collegiate goal on a free position strike with 9:30 to play in the second quarter, cutting the Leopard edge to 7-3.
  • Lafayette took its largest lead of the game, 9-3, with less than six minutes until halftime after goals from Cunningham and Abby Romano.
  • From there, however, the Terriers rattled off four straight goals in a 4:06 span. Lucchese assisted on three of the scores, finding Gola twice as well as sophomore Kendall Sims. Sophomore Ellen Monahan added a goal in the run with a split dodge through the arc.
  • In the third quarter, the Leopards made it 10-7, but Lucchese's spin dodge by the right hanging hash gave her space to bury a goal to get BU back within two with three minutes gone by in the stanza.
  • Sims answered a woman-up goal from Lafayette with a free position tally with 6:36 to go in the third to make it 11-9.
  • The Leopards went on a 3-0 run, featuring a Meghan McLachlan score with 1.2 seconds left in the third, to extend their lead to 14-9 with 11:11 left in the contest.
  • Spaeth recorded two unassisted goals within 48 seconds to cut the Terrier deficit to 14-11 with 9:54 to play.
  • Both teams traded goals the rest of the way, as BU got player-up tallies from Gola and Spaeth.

GAME NOTES
  • The Terriers outshot the Leopards 32-28, though Lafayette had the 24-23 advantage in shots on goal.
  • BU also won the draw over Lafayette, 23-10.
  • Four of BU's 13 goals were with a player up.
  • Senior Kennady Smith and junior Arielle Hammer combined to make eight saves in goal for BU.
  • Barry surpassed Sarah Dalton (Graddock) for second place all-time at BU, and became the second Terrier in program history to control 200 career draws, joining Jill Horka.
  • Matching her season-best in goals, Spaeth increased her scoring streak to seven games.
  • Sims tallied five goals in two games this week, and has 11 on the season to rank third on the team.
