Softball Rolls to DH Sweep at Harvard

ALLSTON, Mass. – Continuing its strong performance at the plate and in the circle, the Boston University softball team opened an eight-game series against regional opponents with a doubleheader sweep at Harvard on Tuesday afternoon.

The Terriers (25-13) more than doubled the Crimson (12-15) in hits, 23-11, to extend the nation's third-longest active win streak to 14 games and the second-longest road win streak to 11 contests. Junior Allison Boaz (14-4) scattered three hits over six innings for a 5-0 game-one victory, and classmate Lizzy Avery (11-8) followed up with a career-high 12 strikeouts in an 8-1 game-two win.

Senior Emily Gant and graduate student Jen Horita went an identical 4-for-7 with a combined five RBIs. Senior Nicole Amodio, freshman Tyesha Williams and junior Caitlin Coker all collected three hits apiece with Coker scoring five of the 13 runs scored. Both Coker and senior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner went yard to create distance with Harvard.

GAME 1: BU - 5, Harvard - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Coker started off the game with a walk, stolen base and run scored on sophomore Lauren Keleher's RBI single up the middle.
  • The Crimson tried to tie the game in the second with a single and sac bunt, but Boaz earned a fly out and ground out to end the threat.
  • Coker helped break open the game in the third by doubling to left center and scoring on Gant's two-out RBI single up the middle.
  • Amodio followed Horita's double with a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • Coker continued to apply pressure on Harvard with a solo shot to right center for the 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
  • Trying to earn a run-rule victory, BU stranded a combined 10 runners on base between the third and sixth innings.
  • After Boaz collected seven strikeouts, senior Julia Handfield entered the circle in relief to start the seventh and added a strikeout for the combined shutout.
GAME 2: BU - 8, Harvard - 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After BU stranded two on base in the top of the first, Harvard scored its lone run in the bottom half with a walk, stolen base and RBI single to left, as Avery earned three strikeouts to open the game.
  • The Terriers needed little time to grab the lead, as they scored four runs off two hits and two Crimson errors in the top of the second.
  • With the bases loaded, Coker was hit by a pitch for the RBI before the go-ahead run scored on a throwing error at home.
  • Gant then delievered a two-out, two-RBI double to left center to extend the lead to 4-1.
  • After Harvard stranded two on base in the second, the Terriers added two more runs when Amodio hit a lead-off double and scored on Huerta-Leipner's homer to center in the third.
  • BU loaded the bases again in the sixth to set up Horita's two-out, two-RBI single through the left side to put the lead at 8-1.
  • With darkness looming in the bottom half, Harvard started off with a single before Avery sealed the six-inning win with a ground out and back-to-back swinging strikeouts.
UP NEXT

  • The Terriers will be hosting the Friars for the first time since claiming a 7-0 win in 2018.
