June 21, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Two members of the 2022-23 Boston University men's ice hockey team - sophomore Ty Gallagher and incoming freshman Lane Hutson - were invited to USA Hockey's National Junior Evaluation Camp, which will take place July 24-Aug. 3 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.
Gallagher was terrific for the Terriers as a freshman last season. In 33 games, Gallagher scored five goals and added 11 assists for 16 points en route to being named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Gallagher led all league rookies with 44 blocked shots and was a plus-8 as one of the Terriers' top four blue liners. He twice posted a three-assist game, first doing so on Oct. 23 in an 8-6 win over Merrimack and then again on Dec. 10 against Boston College. Gallagher also scored the game-tying goal in the third period of an eventual overtime triumph at then-No. 8/9 UMass on Nov. 13. A seventh-round draft choice of the Boston Bruins, Gallagher notched his first collegiate goal at Northern Michigan on Nov. 6 and secured his first collegiate point in his BU debut, a 2-1 win at UConn on Oct. 8. The Clarkston, Michigan, native was a two-time Hockey East Rookie of the Week (Oct. 25 and Jan. 10) and the Hockey East Defender of the Week on Dec. 13.
A standout defenseman for the U.S. National Team Development Program, Hutson was named the top defenseman at the 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Championship after having eight assists and a plus-12 rating in six games for the United States, which finished second behind Sweden. Hutson led the NTDP U-18 team in assists (53) and was second among defensemen in the United States Hockey League with 1.19 points per game (32 points in 27 games), including 13 points (4g, 9a)) in 19 games against NCAA competition. On Monday, Hutson received the prestigious E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence from the National Hockey League, which is given to the candidate who best exemplifies commitment to excellence through strength of character, competitiveness and athleticism.
