Jonas Harper tallying a career-high 23 points, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped a 77-71 decision at two-time defending Patriot League champion Colgate, 77-71, on Wednesday night.
The Raiders (11-7, 5-0 PL) outscored the Terriers (9-9, 2-3 PL) off turnovers, 18-4, with the help of 10 steals and benefited from a 22-14 advantage in fouls called to claim their 20th straight win against PL competition.
Harper flushed five 3-pointers to reach 20+ points for the second time this season and third time in his career, while sophomore
Malcolm Chimezie came up one point shy of a double-double with a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior
Ethan Brittain-Watts was the other Terrier in double figures at 10 points, as BU finished the game 26-of-59 (.441) with a 42-35 advantage in rebounds.
PL Preseason Player of the Year Tucker Richardson tallied a game-high 15 points alongside six rebounds, six assists and four steals, while Jeff Woodward came off the bench with 14 points. Ryan Moffatt (12), Keegan Records (11) and Oliver Lynch-Daniels (11) also scored in double figures. Colgate entered the contest shooting 51.7 FG% and 41.3 3FG% (third best mark nationally) but was held to 26-of-63 (.413) and 8-of-25 (.320) shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a contest featuring 10 ties and 10 lead changes, Harper's turnaround jumper gave BU a 19-14 lead with 8:13 left in the first half.
- The Raiders scored five quick points, but Harper came right back with a 3-pointer to retake the lead.
- Facing a 24-20 deficit with 5:28 remaining, Colgate went on a 9-1 spurt capped by Woodward's dunk at 2:01.
- Chimezie came back with back-to-back driving layups, and Harper added a 3-pointer at 32 seconds for the 32-29 advantage.
- With the score tied, 37-37, at 15:35 on Records' layup and free throw, Harper scored from behind the arc again to spark an 8-1 spurt with Landrum scoring on a putback at 13:16 to move ahead, 45-38.
- After Tynen flushed a 3-pointer for the 48-41 lead with 12:34 remaining, the Raiders went on a 20-4 run capped by back-to-back treys from Richardson and Moffatt at 5:59.
- The Terriers chipped away and pulled within four four times at 4:14 (63-59), 2:06 (66-62), 58 seconds (68-64) and 37 seconds (70-66), but the Raiders always had a response.
- On the final occasion, Colgate took advantage of a flagrant foul with two free throws and a layup to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
- Now ranking eighth all-time at BU with 193 career 3-pointers, Harper is just 22 points away from becoming the 42nd Terrier to reach 1,000 points.
- Chimezie's nine points were one point shy of his personal best and topped his previous high of four scored in PL competition.
- Whyte tied his personal best with four assists, while junior Caelan Jones had a career-high three helpers.
- Freshman Otto Landrum had two blocks, while classmate Nic Nobili had a season-high five rebounds.
- Colgate broke a 30-30 deadlock in the series with their second consecutive win.
