January 23, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
AMESBURY, Mass. - Senior Matt Brown and freshman Lane Hutson of the Boston University men's ice hockey team each earned a weekly award from Hockey East, the league announced on Monday.
Brown was chosen as Hockey East Player of the Week while Hutson earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors. Both Hobey Baker nominees were instrumental in the Terriers' weekend sweep of Maine.
Now a two-time Hockey East Player of the Week, Brown was excellent against the Black Bears. He led all league skaters with six points and was tied for the conference lead in both goals (2) and assists (4). Brown recorded his third four-point effort of the season on Saturday, scoring a goal and assisting on three others as he helped BU build a 4-0 lead in the first period.
A native of Wood Ridge, New Jersey, Brown is among the NCAA's leading point producers this season. He ranks second nationally with 23 assists and is fourth nationally with 34 points; both those totals lead Hockey East. He is also tied for fifth among league skaters with 11 goals. All of these marks are new career highs for Brown.
Hutson led all Hockey East freshmen and defensemen with five points against Maine, scoring one goal and providing four primary assists. He tallied two assists on Friday before scoring a goal and adding two more assists the next night.
A three-time Hockey East Rookie of the Week, Huston has not only been one of the best freshmen in the nation this season but one of the country's top defensemen regardless of class, as he leads all NCAA blue liners with 27 points. Hutson is third overall and is first among both Hockey East rookies and defensemen with 27 points and 18 assists, and he also leads all Hockey East defensemen with nine goals.
The No. 4/5 Terriers will host rival Boston College on Friday night at Agganis Arena in the first of a home-and-home series with the Eagles this weekend. Puck drop in Boston is scheduled for 7 p.m.
