BOSTON – Former Boston University men's ice hockey standout Matt Grzelcyk ('16) will be inducted into the Beanpot Hall of Fame, as announced on Monday at TD Garden.
In a first for the Beanpot Hall of Fame, Grzelcyk's father, John Grzelcyk, will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2023. John has been a member of TD Garden's bullgang, the crew famous for flipping the ice to parquet in record time, for 55 years. Grzelcyk will be the 18th Terrier to be inducted into the Beanpot Hall of Fame.
"On behalf of Boston University, I want to congratulate Matt and John on becoming the newest members of the Beanpot Hall of Fame." said Boston University Director of Athletics Drew Marrochello. "Matt's overtime winner in the 2015 Beanpot final remains one of the most memorable goals in program history and it's been a pleasure to watch him continue to shine in Boston with the Bruins. For over 50 years, John has been one of those people behind the scenes who have made The Beanpot iconic. He's a Boston institution himself. The Grzelcyks are a special family to all of us at BU, and for them to be inducted together is wonderful and is the perfect way to recognize two people who have left an indelible legacy on both the Beanpot and the TD Garden."
Grzelcyk, currently a defenseman with the Boston Bruins, was named Beanpot MVP in 2015 after he scored two goals, including the overtime winner, to lift BU to a 4-3 victory over Northeastern for the program's 30th Beanpot title. A two-year captain of the Terriers, Grzelcyk is one of just 12 Terriers to twice be named a First Team All-American. He finished his collegiate career with 26 goals and 69 assists for 95 points through 125 games. Grzelcyk was also a two-time Hockey East First Team All-Star
"I'm thrilled for both Matt and John on their well-deserved induction into the Beanpot Hall of Fame," said Boston University Head Coach
Jay Pandolfo. "Matt was a tremendous player at BU who I got to coach during my time with the Bruins, and he has grown into an outstanding professional who will have a long and successful NHL career. I also got to know John when I was with the Bruins, and his work ethic and dedication to the TD Garden is second to none."
As a member of the Bruins, Grzelcyk has played in over 350 games, scoring 22 goals and adding 94 assists for 116 points. He is a plus-107 for his six full seasons in the NHL and has helped the Bruins reach the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs four times, including a run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
The Charlestown, Massachusetts natives will be presented their awards during a ceremony in between consolation and championship games on Monday, Feb. 13, at TD Garden.
