Terriers Sustain First Home Loss in 62-47 Contest with Hawks

BOSTON – Senior Caitlin Weimar posted 18 points and junior Alex Giannaros notched 13 points, but the Boston University women's basketball team could not overcome unbeaten Saint Joseph's in a 62-47 setback on Tuesday evening at Case Gym.

BU (5-3) led for under two-and-a-half minutes in the game, as the Hawks (8-0) went ahead late in the first quarter and did not relinquish the advantage from that point, handing the Terriers their first loss at The Roof in the 2023-24 season.

Weimar led BU with six rebounds, while Giannaros dished out five assists.

Mackenzie Smith dropped a game-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting, 18 coming in the opening 20 minutes. Talya Brugler recorded all 13 of her points in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Anete Adler scored BU's first six points of the game, including a layup on the right block from Weimar's feed to put BU on top 6-5 in the game's first three minutes. However, she sustained an injury near the midpoint of the stanza and did not return.
  • Giannaros drove down the right line off an inbounds play to make it 10-9 Terriers, but Saint Joseph's countered with a 6-0 spurt over the first's final 1:42 to go ahead 15-10.
  • Leading by four, the Hawks rattled off an 12-0 run, with Smith and Laura Ziegler nailing straightaway threes to push the gap to 27-11 with 5:39 to go in the second quarter.
  • Smith's nostalgic three-point play gave Saint Joseph's a 15-point cushion, but six-consecutive points from Weimar, then Giannaros' right-handed floater inside the paint closed the gap to 32-23 with under two minutes until halftime.
  • Trailing 41-25 in the third quarter, Weimar scored six-straight points once again to bring BU within 10 just 2:11 into the frame.
  • Senior Kelsi Mingo nailed the Terriers' first and only triple of the evening from the left corner, then turned Smith over and found Weimar on the right block to pull BU within single digits, 50-42, with two minutes remaining in the third.
  • The Hawks extended the lead to 56-42 early in the fourth quarter on Chloe Welch's jumper, and BU didn't score until the clock read 7:42 when Weimar converted a second-chance opportunity. On the next play, however, she fouled out of the game.
  • With 5:46 left, Giannaros bounced a pass to sophomore Anastasiia Semenova to cut the deficit to single digits, 56-47. However, BU would not score the rest of the way.
STATS
  • The Terriers shot just 39.2 percent from the field, and made one of just 11 three-pointers.

  • BU collected 30 points in the paint, and turned 18 Hawks turnovers into 16 points.
