The No. 9/8 Boston University men's ice hockey team will travel to Vermont this weekend for a two-game series against the Catamounts that begins Friday night at 7. Puck drop on Saturday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Both games will be streamed on ESPN+, with an audio-only broadcast of both contests located here.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- The Terriers enter the weekend in second place in the Hockey East standings, just one point behind Northeastern and one point ahead of Merrimack.
- With a win of any kind, or a UConn loss of any kind, they will clinch home ice for the Hockey East quarterfinals.
- BU has already secured a spot in the quarterfinals and can finish no lower than fifth in the league standings.
- Senior Matt Brown, a Hobey Baker nominee, became the first man in Hockey East to reach 40 points this season when he notched his team-leading 14th goal this past Saturday.
- Brown is seventh nationally in both total points as well as points per game (1.33).
- No other NCAA defenseman has more points (38) and assists (28) than freshman Lane Hutson, who is second in Hockey East behind Brown in points and first in the entire league in assists.
- Also a Hobey Baker nominee, Hutson became the first league defenseman to score 10 goals this season when he lit the lamp this past Saturday.
- BU is fifth in the NCAA and first in Hockey East with an average of 3.90 goals per game.
- Freshman Jeremy Wilmer has recorded at least one point in 10 of the last 13 games, including two assists last Saturday.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Terriers and Catamounts have played 89 times since the 1971-72 season, with BU holding a 54-25-10 (.663) advantage.
- BU is 20-5-3 in the past 26 meetings, including a two-game sweep of the Catamounts in Vermont during the 2020-21 campaign.
- The teams split last season's series at Agganis.
- From 1974-84, the teams shared time in the ECAC, with BU posting a 13-4-1 record against the Catamounts during the span.
- Since the Catamounts joined Hockey East in 2005, the teams have met 48 times and BU holds a 27-14-7 advantage in those contests.
- Overtime has been necessary in 18 meetings and BU is 7-1-10 in those decisions, with the one loss coming last year.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
- Vermont enters the weekend in last place in Hockey East, trailing 10th-place UMass by four points with four games remaining.
- The Catamounts, winless in their last four games, most recently suffered a 3-0 home setback to Northeastern last Saturday.
- Prior to that Northeastern defeat, Vermont earned a pair of ties at UMass after rallying from 3a -0 deficit both nights.
- Sophomore Isak Walther leads UVM in goals (7) and points (17) and is tied for second on the squad in assists (10).
- Sophomore Andrei Buyalsky is second in points with 14 thanks to three goals and a team-best 11 assists.
- Junior Gabe Carriere and graduate student Oskar Autio have split time between the pipes lately, with each making five starts in 2023.
- Carriere is 7-11-3 this season with a .912 save percentage and a 2.46 goals-against average.
- Autio is 2-5-1 with a .913 save percentage and a 2.82 goals-against average.
