Hutson Lifts No. 5 Terriers to 10th Hockey East Crown in Overtime Thriller

BOSTON - Freshman Lane Hutson scored his second goal of the night 1:57 into overtime to lift the No. 5 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over No. 14 Merrimack and lead the Terriers to their 10th Hockey East tournament title in program history on Saturday evening at TD Garden.

The Terriers erased deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to send the contest into overtime before Hutson's seeing-eye wrister from the center point found the back of the net to ignite a wild celebration on the Garden ice and stretch BU's win streak to seven games.

It was the second overtime win of the weekend for BU as Lane's older brother, Quinn, provided the heroics in Friday's semifinal against Providence.

Lane Hutson was named the Bill Flynn Tournament MVP and was joined on the Steve Nazro All-Tournament Team by classmate Devin Kaplan and juniors Drew Commesso and Dylan Peterson.

Kaplan's goal with 10:58 left in regulation sent the game to overtime while Commesso made 23 saves on Saturday after recording 37 stops in the semifinal victory. Kaplan also assisted on Hutson's first goal to join his classmate with two points on Saturday.

BU completed its seventh Hockey East "double" by claiming both the regular-season and tournament titles, joining the 1993-94, 1994-95, 1996-97, 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2014-15 squads. Jay Pandolfo, who won the "double" as a player in 1993-94 and 1994-95, became the first first-year head coach to lead a team to the Hockey East Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU got the first power-play chance of the game just 5:14 into the first but the Warriors ended up capitalizing on a shorthanded chance to open the scoring.
  • Christian Felton got a tiny piece of a centering pass from Ben Brar and snuck the puck between Commesso's legs 6:57 into the contest.
  • The Terriers tied the game early in the second thanks to two Merrimack penalties late in the first as Lane Hutson drilled in a one-timer from the right dot off a feed from senior captain Domenick Fensore for a 5-on-3 tally 38 seconds into the middle stanza.
  • The Warriors regained the lead at 15:09 of the second when Mac Welcher scored off of a faceoff.
  • Kaplan created the second deadlock of the night midway through the third, taking a pass from senior Jamie Armstrong and skating through the zone before beating Merrimack netminder Hugo Ollas from the right circle.
  • Both teams had strong chances late in regulation but the respective netminders held their ground to send the contest into overtime.
  • Senior Matt Brown took a pass from classmate Sam Stevens and curled behind the Merrimack goal before sliding a pass up to Hutson, who moved from the right point to the center before flicking the last shot of the night into the net.
GAME NOTES
  • Freshman Ryan Greene assisted on three of the Terriers' five goals this weekend, including Kaplan's game-tying goal; all three of his assists were in the third period or overtime.
  • Six of this year's 10 Hockey East tournament games went to overtime, including all three played at TD Garden.
  • This was the Terriers' third overtime win in a league title game; BU also won the Hockey East Tournament via an OT goal in 2006 and 1991.
  • The 2006 winner was also scored by a freshman, as Brandon Yip provided the heroics.
  • BU held a 30-25 shot advantage as Ollas made 27 stops for the Warriors.
  • The Terriers went 1-for-5 on the power play and successfully killed off both of Merrimack's chances with the man advantage.
  • In addition to Pandolfo, the other two Terrier alumni on the coaching staff, associate head coach Joe Pereira and director of operations Doug Friedman, also completed the Hockey East "double" as players.
  • Either Lane or Quinn Hutson has scored four of the Terriers' five overtime goals this season.
  • In addition, one of the two Hutsons has scored or assisted on six of the Terriers' seven winners during their current streak.
  • BU bested Vermont, Providence and Merrimack in the tournament, which were also the final three teams the Terriers faced in the regular season.
UP NEXT
  • BU has secured its 38th NCAA Tournament appearance and will learn its draw on Sunday's selection show, which will air on ESPNU at 6:30 p.m.
