March 19, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - Fresh off the program's 10th Hockey East tournament title, the Boston University men's ice hockey team will play in the NCAA Manchester Regional and face Western Michigan in the opening round, as announced Sunday on the NCAA selection show on ESPNU.
The Terriers (27-10-0), the No. 2 seed in the regional, will take on the Broncos on Thursday (March 23) at 2 p.m at SNHU Arena on ESPN2. Top-seeded Denver, the defending national champion, will face Cornell at 5:30 p.m.
BU will be making its 38th NCAA appearance and first since 2021. Each of the Terriers' past two Frozen Four teams (2009, 2015) won a regional in Manchester.
Western Michigan (23-14-1) got into the NCAAs as an at-large team after falling to Colorado College in the NCHC quarterfinals. The Broncos earned at least one win against all of their conference mates except for Denver and their top non-conference wins were against Michigan Tech, Northeastern and Notre Dame.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools since Dec. 30, 1994, when the Terriers posted a 5-2 win in the opening round of the Mariucci Classic. Head coach Jay Pandolfo was a junior on that squad, which went on to win the program's fourth national title. BU and WMU have split their six all-time meetings with each team winning three times.
The two winners from Thursday's contests will meet on Saturday (March 25) at 4 p.m. for a spot in the Frozen Four. That game will be televised on ESPNU.
