Softball Heads West to San Diego Classic

BOSTON – Heading out west for a pair of weekend tournaments, the Boston University softball team will open the San Diego Classic on Friday with San Diego State and the University of San Diego serving as co-hosts.

The Terriers will start off against Montana at 12 p.m. ET and follow with Long Beach State (2:30 p.m. ET). BU will meet LBSU one more time on Saturday and also face San Diego State twice before concluding the competition at San Diego. 

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU went 7-5 last season in California last season with notable wins over San Diego State, UC San Diego, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.
  • Batting 1-2 in the lineup, juniors Lauren Keleher (.500) and Kayla Roncin (.489) have combined for 22 RBIs and 21 runs scored with Roncin owning three homers. They have both been named Patriot League Player of the Week once this season.
  • The reigning PL Rookie of the Week Brooke Deppiesse (.343) is the third Terrier batting over .300 with team-high three doubles and 11 RBIs.
  • Senior Audrey Sellers is just under the mark at .296 with 10 runs scored, while classmate Caitlin Coker (.273) has 11 runs scored with the help of three triples.
  • Freshman Kasey Ricard (4-1, 3.36 ERA) has posted 42 strikeouts in 33.1 innings pitched, and senior Allison Boaz (5-2, 3.12 ERA) has 30 strikeouts in 33.2 IP. Senior Lizzy Avery (2-0, 1.56 ERA) is holding opponents to just .169 batting average with 12 strikeouts against nine walks in 18.0 IP.
  • Overall, BU is batting .314 while holding opponents to .218 with opponents owning 11-5 advantage in homers and the Terriers claiming 14-3 lead in stolen bases.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

Montana, 0-15 (Friday, 12 p.m. ET)
  • The Grizzlies are winless so far after going 20-27 a year prior, most recently dropping a 12-9 decision to Utah State. Team has one-run losses to South Dakota and CSU Bakersfield.
  • Hannah Jablonski leads Montana at .289 with two homers and six RBIs. She is also tied with Kelly Sweyer (.286) at four doubles.
  • Allie Brock (0-4, 3.82 ERA) owns a team-high 18 strikeouts in 25.2 innings, and Grace Haegele (0-8, 8.85 ERA) has 11 strikeouts in 34.0 innings.
  • Overall, Montana is batting .215 with opponents hitting .319 with a 26-0 advantage in stolen bases.
  • The Terriers pulled out a 3-2 victory in the lone meeting between the two programs back in 2020 at the University of Arkansas with Avery delivering a two-RBI double.
Long Beach State, 5-10 (Friday, 2:30 p.m. ET / Saturday, 1 p.m. ET)
  • The Beach own wins over NC State (4-2) and Kansas (6-5) after going 29-22 a year prior and are looking to bounce back following shutout losses to Utah (4-0) and Missouri (9-0).
  • Carly Robbins (.326) has five RBIs with two doubles, while Teah Thies (.276) owns team-high seven runs scored and six RBIs.
  • Six pitchers have taken to the circle with Shannon Haddad (3-3, 3.82 ERA) owns 29 strikeouts in 36.2 innings, while Eryka Gonzales (1-2, 3.23 ERA) has 12 in 21.2 IP.
  • Overall, LBSU is batting .249 and is holding opponents to .298 with opponents owning 32-22 advantage in extra-base hits.
  • LSBU leads all-time series, 4-2, after BU claimed 7-2 win in 2022 and the teams split in 2020.
San Diego State, 10-5 (Saturday, 6 p.m. ET / Sunday, 3:30 p.m. ET)
  • The Aztecs nearly reached the Super Regionals last May, beating both then-No. 22 LSU and Cal State Fullerton while coming just short to No. 8 Arizona State twice. 
  • SDSU is receiving national votes with notable wins over Notre Dame (3-0), Wichita State (3-2), BYU (4-1) and CSUF (6-5) alongside close losses to No. 18 Kentucky (2-0) and No. 24 Oregon (6-4).
  • Bella Espinoza is batting team-high .415, while Mac Barbara (.333) owns three homers and 13 RBIs.
  • SDSU has four pitchers tallying between 20.2-28.0 innings pitched. Allie Light (1-3, 2.25 ERA) has four saves with 36 strikeouts in 28.0 IP, while Dani Martinez (3-1, 1.02 ERA) has 15 strikeouts in 20.2 IP.
  • Overall, the Aztecs are batting .301 and are holding opponents to .235 with 23-4 advantage in stolen bases.
  • SDSU leads the all-time series, 5-4, with BU winning four of the last five matchups, including a 7-2 decision last season.
San Diego, 3-14 (Sunday, 6 p.m. ET)
  • The Toreros own wins over LBSU (3-2), UC San Diego (3-2) and Portland State (12-1) along with a tough 2-1 loss to then-No. 19 Northwestern after going 20-34 a year prior.
  • Izzy Owen is batting a team-high .306, while Arisa Tovar (.300) owns seven RBIs.
  • USD has three pitchers with 24+ innings pitched. Courtney Rose (0-3, 2.57 ERA) has 23 strikeouts in 30.0 IP, while Kelsey Tadlock (1-6, 6.93 ERA) has 10 strikeouts in 32.1 IP.
  • Overall, the Toreros are batting .209 while holding opponents to .349 with opponents owning 20-3 advantage in homers.
  • BU has won both meetings on the road, earning a 3-1 win last season following a 3-0 victory in 2017.
