Kasey Ricard's 10 strikeouts, the Boston University softball team upset No. 12/16 Baylor, 2-0, after dropping a tightly-contested 2-1 decision to defending Big Sky champion Weber State on Friday afternoon as part of the Louisville Slugger Invitational at the LBSU Softball Complex.
In the second game, the Terriers (17-6) took advantage of an error for a 1-0 lead and then plated a second run in the fourth on a bases-loaded RBI sac fly against the Bears (18-3). BU struck early in the first inning against the Wildcats (6-14) but stranded seven on base and committed an error in the sixth en route to its second one-run defeat of the year.

Caitlin Coker led BU with three hits and was joined by graduate student
Emily Gant and sophomore
Tyesha Williams in recording at least one hit in both contests. In the circle, senior
Allison Boaz (9-3) limited Weber State to just three hits and one earned run in 5.2 innings of work with the help of five strikeouts. After striking out the lone Wildcat faced, Ricard went the distance in the second game for her second shutout over a Power 5 program this season.
GAME 2: BU - 2, #12/16 Baylor - 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears had the game's first good opportunity to get on the scoreboard with back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the second.
- Ricard though bounced back with a strikeout and fly out before catching a foul ball down the third base line to keep two Bears in scoring position.
- After Baylor retired the first six Terriers, Williams started the third with an infield single before taking second on graduate student Nicole Amodio's sac bunt and scoring on a two-out fielding error for the 1-0 advantage.
- BU had an opportunity to blow open the game, as Coker, freshman Brooke Deppiesse and Gant all got on base to start the fourth.
- Junior Lauren Nett followed up with a long sac fly to left to plate Coker and double the lead to 2-0 before Rylee Crandall (6-2) prevented further damage with a line out and ground out.
- Ricard allowed singles in the fourth and sixth innings before getting out of the jam with a combined four strikeouts.
- Baylor threatened one more time in the bottom of the seventh with a lead-off single, one-out walk and two-out single off Ricard's glove before hitting a hard grounder toward graduate student Nicole Amodio at first for the loss.
GAME 1: Weber State - 2, BU - 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Lauren Keleher started the first with a single and was eventually replaced by classmate Kayla Roncin and then Coker on back-to-back fielder's choice ground outs.
- Coker eventually scored BU's lone run following Deppiesse's single, Gant's walk and and a wild pitch.
- Roncin doubled to left in the third but ended up stranded at second.
- Gant doubled to left center to start the fourth and but ended up being thrown out trying to reach home on Nett's single to center.
- Coker returned to second in the fifth on a two-out walk and stolen base before Baylor earned a ground out to short.
- The Wildcats mounted their rally in the bottom of the sixth by loading the bases on a single, walk and fielding error.
- Weber State then recorded back-to-back RBI ground outs and loaded the bases again on a walk before Ricard entered the circle for a strikeout.
- Keleher earned a two-out single in the seventh before the Wildcats sealed the win on a ground out.
GAME NOTES
- Ricard earned her third solo shutout of the year following wins over Georgia Tech (2-0) and South Florida (8-0) with her 10 strikeouts marking the most by a Terrier this season.
- BU defeated a ranked opponent in back-to-back seasons following a 6-1 win at then-No. 13 Georgia in 2022.
- The Terriers also defeated their first Big 12 opponent in five years since beating then-No. 1 Oklahoma (4-3) in 2018 while also claiming their first shutout over a Power 5 program outside Massachusetts since 2020 (2-0 vs. Virginia).
- BU faced Weber State for the first time in program history and improved to 1-2 all-time against Baylor in their first meeting since 2004.

- BU is scheduled to next face Sacramento Sate on Friday (March 10) with a 12 p.m. ET first pitch and then battle Columbia at 2:30 p.m. ET.
