No. 20 BU Defeats No. 9 Army West Point, 12-11, to Win Second Straight PL Regular-Season Title

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior Thomas Niedringhaus scored with 2:51 remaining in regulation to break an 11-11 tie and lift the No. 20 Boston University men's lacrosse team to its second straight Patriot League regular-season title with a 12-11 victory at No. 9 Army West Point on Friday night at Michie Stadium.

BU (10-3, 7-1 PL) held just two leads for a total of 2:58, but BU killed a late man-up chance from Army (10-3, 7-1 PL) thanks to one of graduate student Matt Garber's 10 saves and then survived a last-second bid to secure the top seed in the Patriot League Tournament and earn the right to host the conference semifinals and championship game at Nickerson Field.

Niedringhaus was one of five different Terriers to tally two goals on Friday, joining graduate students Timmy Ley and Jake Cates, sophomore Zach Travaglini and senior Vince D'Alto. D'Alto led the Terriers with five points on Friday, including his 200th career point as a Terrier. D'Alto became the second Terrier in program history to reach that milestone, as Ley recorded his 200th point on April 4 at Yale.

Senior Louis Perfetto recorded three assists while sophomore Brenden Kelly notched a goal and an assist to complete a multi-point night. Sophomore Jimmy O'Connell found the back of the net as well to help BU finish 3-of-6 on EMOs.

Senior Patrick Morrison led BU with two caused turnovers and six ground balls, including a caused turnover and ground ball that led to the game-winning possession. Senior Roy Meyer also had two caused turnovers and finished with two ground balls while junior Dane DeGoler recorded four ground balls in addition to a caused turnover.

Garber made six of his 10 saves in the second half, including that huge man-down stop to keep BU ahead by a goal with 1:52 remaining in regulation.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army opened the scoring just 1:26 into the contest, but Travaglini answered 29 seconds later off a feed from D'Alto.
  • The Black Knights regained the lead with 11:01 on the clock, but Ley tied the game at 5:43 with a fantastic behind-the-back effort.
  • Ryan Sposito's second goal of the quarter gave Army a 3-2 lead through 15 minutes.
  • Cates opened the second stanza with a behind-the-back goal of his own to even the score, but Army countered with two straight goals to take a 5-3 lead.
  • Niedringhaus took it to the rack midway through the quarter to get BU within one, but once again Army answered with a goal to retake a two-goal lead.
  • Ley ripped home his second goal of the night with 2:37 left in the half to make it a 6-5 score, but Reese Burek buried a shot with 1:22 to go to give the Black Knights a 7-5 halftime edge.
  • BU began the second half with a pair of man-up goals to even the score at 7-7, with O'Connell and Cates doing the honors.
  • Army regained the lead at 8:12 before Kelly once again tied it at 7:18, but the Black Knights scored with 5:12 to go in the quarter to take a 9-8 lead into the final 15 minutes.
  • Travaglini tied it at 9-9 just 38 seconds into the final frame, but Army grabbed a 10-9 advantage with 12:23 on the clock.
  • D'Alto then scored two straight goals to give BU its first lead of the night at 11-10 with 6:54 to play.
  • Will Coletti won the ensuing faceoff, however, and scored to tie it just seven seconds after D'Alto's strike.
  • After Morrison's outstanding defensive play won BU the ball back, Niedringhaus delivered the heroics when he capitalized on a short-stick matchup and drove to the crease before scoring the winner.
  • BU killed most of the remainder of the clock following Garber's final save of the night, but the Black Knights got one final chance as Knox Dent made his 17th save of the contest with just over 20 seconds to play.
  • Army cleared the ball but only got off one shot that whistled high. The pass attempt off the restart with less than four seconds remaining didn't connect and BU began its celebration.
