BOSTON – Facing a two-run deficit with just five outs remaining, the Boston University softball team rallied for a thrilling 3-2 home victory over Lafayette on Sunday afternoon.
Senior
Caitlin Coker delivered her second walk-off hit of the weekend, as the Terriers (31-7, 6-0 PL) completed the series sweep over the Leopards (4-26-1, 1-8 PL).
Junior
Kayla Roncin led BU batting a game-high 3-for-4 with a run scored in the sixth and two-out RBI single in the seventh. Graduate student
Emily Gant had an RBI, and senior
Audrey Sellers batted 2-for-3.
In the circle, senior
Allison Boaz pitched the first five innings, tallying six strikeouts against six hits, including a two-run homer in the top of the sixth. Freshman
Kasey Ricard (13-2) replaced Boaz in the circle and earned four strikeouts against one hit to claim the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams earned a one-out single and stolen base in the first inning but stranded the runner in scoring position.
- The Leopards earned three singles in the third inning, but Sellers threw out Harlie Bickett trying to steal second and Boaz ended the threat with a ground out.
- The Terriers nearly grabbed the lead in the fifth after sophomore Sydney Pecoraro was hit by a pitch and Sellers singled up the middle, but Lafayette managed a diving stop on junior Lauren Keleher's hard grounder toward the right side.
- In the sixth, Kylee Sweet earned a lead-off walk and scored on Kaili Reitano's two-run blast to left center.
- Ricard gave up another single but settled in, retiring the next six Leopards with the help of four strikeouts.
- Roncin cut the deficit in half in the bottom half by singling through the left side, stealing second, reaching third on Coker's ground out and scoring on Gant's RBI grounder to second.
- With senior Lizzy Avery on first following a single and two outs, Sellers hit a two-out single and Keleher was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
- Roncin then beat out a throw from short for an RBI single, and Coker walked off with an RBI single through the right side.
UP NEXT
- BU will next host non-conference rival Harvard on Tuesday (April 11) with the doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m.
- The Terriers swept the road doubleheader last season, 8-1 and 5-0, and will be hosting the Crimson for the first time since earning a 2-1 victory in 2014.
