May 11, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The Boston University men's ice hockey team announced this past weekend that Case McCarthy will return for a fifth year and serve as captain of the 2023-24 Terriers.
McCarthy recorded a career-high 15 points as a senior thanks to three goals and a career-best 12 assists before having his season cut short due to an injury in the Hockey East semifinals. In 105 career games, McCarthy has recorded 43 points on 11 goals and 32 assists.
"I'm thrilled that Case is not only coming back for a fifth year but that he will be wearing a 'C' on his jersey," head coach Jay Pandolfo said. "He is a terrific player, but more importantly, he's an outstanding person who has the respect of his teammates, coaches and our support staff. Case showed tremendous leadership ability last year, especially after his season-ending injury, and I know he'll continue to push our program in a positive direction as we compete for a national title."
In addition, Sam Stevens will also be back for a fifth year and serve as one of four assistant captains along with Luke Tuch, Cade Webber and Lane Hutson. Tuch and McCarthy were assistant captains this past season while Stevens, Webber and Hutson will be wearing letters for the first time.
"I'm excited that Sam chose to return for a fifth year along with Case and I'm glad that he will be part of our leadership group along with Luke, Cade and Lane," Pandolfo said. "All of them take great pride in wearing the BU jersey and I know they'll continue to represent the University in the best possible manner."
In addition to announcing next season's leadership group, Pandolfo and his staff presented the team awards at the annual banquet at the Francis D. Burke Club Room at Agganis Arena. Hutson took home two honors, as he was named the George V. Brown Most Valuable Player and also earned the Ed Carpenter Award as the Terriers' top point producer. Hutson, the Walter Brown Award winner as the best American-born men's ice hockey player in New England, led BU with 48 points on 15 goals and a team-best 33 assists. A First Team All-American, Hockey East First Team All-Star and New England MVP, Hutson recorded the most points by a freshman defenseman in Hockey East history.
Domenick Fensore, the 2022-23 captain, received the Travis Roy Award, presented to the player who best exemplifies who Travis Roy was as a person, someone of great character who is a class citizen and a great teammate, as well as the Bennett McInnis Award for Spirit. Fensore was a fantastic leader this past season as he helped guide the Terriers to the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles along with a trip to the Frozen Four in Tampa. His leadership and love for Boston University were not only recognized by his teammates and coaches but by the entire athletic department, as Fensore received the John B. Simpson Award for enthusiastic senior leadership.
Webber was named the Most Improved Player after an outstanding junior season. A steady and reliable defender, Webber recorded career highs in goals (1), assists (5) and points (6). He also finished second in the nation with 95 blocked shots. Stevens was selected as the Friends/Albert Sidd Unsung Hero Award winner after he recorded career highs with eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points in addition to his strong work at the faceoff dot. Jamie Armstrong claimed the Iron Terrier Award, which is presented to the player who most exemplifies character, strength, dedication and discipline in the weight room and off-ice training. Armstrong enjoyed his best season as a Terrier, setting career highs in goals (5), assists (8) and points (13).
