BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior
Caitlin Coker delivered a two-RBI double in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough, as Lehigh scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to edge the Boston University softball team, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Leadership Park.
Having already secured its fifth straight Patriot League regular season title, BU (48-8, 17-1 PL) will enter the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed with a program and conference record 48 wins against eight losses, including four decided by just one run. The Mountain Hawks (39-12, 16-2 PL) posted a 7-5 advantage in hits to halt the Terriers' PL and team-record 28-game win streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Carley Barjaktarovic led off the game with an infield single and stolen base, but senior Lizzy Avery (7-2) bounced back with two strikeouts and a ground out.
- The Terriers were held hitless by Katelyn Young (20-6) through three innings until graduate student Emily Gant followed senior Caitlin Coker's walk with a one-out single.
- BU ended up loading the bases on junior Lauren Nett's walk before Young earned a fly out.
- In the fifth, senior Audrey Sellers singled to center with one out and junior Lauren Keleher reached base following an error in the outfield.
- After Young earned a force out at third, Coker doubled to right to grab a 2-0 lead.
- Freshman Brooke Deppiesse started the sixth with a single and took second on Nett's sac bunt but ended up stranded on base alongside graduate student Nicole Amodio (walk).
- Lehigh took advantage of BU's inability to extend the lead by rallying for three runs in the bottom half with a pair of singles and one-out, two-RBI double that saw Brooke Cannon reach third on the throw home.
- Freshman Kasey Ricard entered the circle trying to keep the game tied, but Lehigh flew the ball to center for an RBI sac fly.
- Junior Kayla Roncin hit a one-out single in the top of the seventh before being stranded on a pair of pop ups.
