Hutson, Kaplan Invited to World Junior Summer Showcase
June 22, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Rising sophomores Lane Hutson and Devin Kaplan of the Boston University men's ice hockey team have been invited to USA Hockey's World Junior Summer Showcase, will take place July 27-Aug. 4 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. The week-long camp, featuring games against teams from Finland and Sweden, will be used to evaluate candidates for the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, which will be held Dec. 26, 2023, through Jan. 5, 2024, in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Hutson, a bronze medalist for Team USA at the 2023 World Junior Championship, most recently skated for the U.S. Men's National Team at the World Championship in May. The youngest player on Team USA's roster, Hutson tallied two goals, four assists and was a plus-7 in the tournament. That performance came after a historic freshman campaign at BU. A First Team All-American, Hutson was the best defenseman in the nation regardless of class this season. The Walter Brown Award winner as the top American-born player in New England, Hutson surpassed Brian Leetch as the highest-scoring freshman defenseman in Hockey East history, totaling 48 points on 15 goals and 33 assists, one better than Leetch's 47 (9g, 38a). Hutson's 48 points is the most by a freshman blue liner since 1986-87 and Hutson ranks fifth all-time among freshman defensemen in points. Nationally, Hutson led all defensemen in both goals (15) and points (48). He ranked seventh among all skaters in total points, was tied for sixth overall with 33 assists and was first among freshman defensemen in plus-minus as a plus-25.
Kaplan, teammates with Hutson on the U.S. National Under-18 Team prior to arriving at BU, was outstanding in his rookie season with the Terriers. Appearing in all 40 games, Kaplan scored 10 goals and added 13 assists for 23 points. He was named to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team after he scored the game-tying goal as part of a two-point performance in the Terriers' 3-2 overtime win over Merrimack in the Hockey East title game. BU was 8-1 when Kaplan found the back of the net, including a two-goal effort in a 6-2 win over UMass on Jan. 11. He compiled five multi-point efforts, including a three-point game in that January victory over the Minutemen. The Terriers were 15-2 when Kaplan recorded at least one point and he finished the season as a plus-15.
