June 29, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
NASHVILLE - Four future Boston University men's ice hockey players were selected during day two of the 2023 NHL Draft at Bridgestone Arena on Thursday.
In total, five future Terriers were selected during this year's draft, as incoming freshman Tom Willander was taken 11th overall by Vancouver on Wednesday. That marks the most Terriers picked in one draft since eight Terriers were chosen in 2019. BU was second in the NCAA with five players drafted over the course of the two days. No other Hockey East school has had more players chosen in the last two years than BU, which has boasted eight draft picks in that span.
Thursday began with former Terrier standout and current San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier trading up to select Brandon Svoboda with the 71st overall pick. Gavin McCarthy also came off the board in the third round at 86th overall to his hometown Buffalo Sabres.
Aiden Celebrini also got drafted by his hometown team, as the North Vancouver native went in the sixth round to the Canucks. The Tampa Bay Lightning then opened the seventh round by picking Jack Harvey, who became the 195th Terrier taken in the NHL Draft.
Three Terriers - Svoboda, McCarthy and Harvey - played this past season in the USHL. Svoboda scored 16 goals and added 10 assists for 26 points for the Youngstown Phantoms while McCarthy notched eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points with the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Harvey had a breakout year for the Chicago Steel, finishing second in goals (40) and fourth in points (74) among all USHL skaters. Celebrini totaled 21 points (5g, 16a) to help the Brooks Bandits win the 2023 AJHL championship.
Celebrini, Harvey, McCarthy and Willander will join the Terriers this fall while Svoboda will play next season with Youngstown.
