Softball Lands Second Consecutive NFCA Northeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year Honor

June 8, 2023

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After posting the Northeast's most wins in 21 years with a program and conference record 52 victories, the Boston University softball team has earned its second consecutive Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Thursday afternoon.

Three-peating as Patriot League Coach of the Year back in May, eighth-year head coach Ashley Waters was formally honored alongside associate head coach Becca Carden and assistant coach Donna Friedman with strength & conditioning coach Beth Lazarus and athletic trainer Madeline Shaw helping make sure the Terriers were prepared to perform at an elite level. They helped guide BU to a 52-10 record that included a program and conference record-breaking 28-game win streak.

BU was just one of three programs alongside Oklahoma (Central) and Northwestern (Great Lakes) to retain its respective region's Coaching Staff of the Year honor from the year prior. The Terriers accomplished the feat by capturing their fifth straight PL regular season title, claiming their 12th overall NCAA bid and entering the NFCA's Top 25 National Poll for the first time since 1996.

Highlights during the regular season included shutouts over then-No. 12 Baylor (2-0), Big West champion Cal State Fullerton (10-0), Penn State (4-0), Boston College (11-0), Georgia Tech (2-0), Long Beach State (2-0) and UConn. Overall, the Terriers posted a 13-5 record against top-100 programs with a 5-3 win against the West Regional's Coaching Staff of the Year from San Diego State.

BU would finish the year with program records for shutouts (24), batting average (.327), fielding percentage (.980), runs scored (341), hits (522), RBIs (304), strikeouts (404) and triples (35 - tied) while boasting nine top-15 finishes in NCAA statistical categories, highlighted by the No. 1 slot in triples per game (0.56) and No. 2 result in shutouts along with the nation's No. 5 batting average.

The Terriers have wracked up many NFCA awards this year with junior Kayla Roncin earning the Patriot League's first-ever All-America (third team) honor and the program's first since 2010. Freshman Kasey Ricard was named to the NFCA's Top 25 Freshman of the Year Finalist List and was joined by Roncin along with six other teammates in claiming All-Region recognition. BU was just one of two squads alongside UCLA to have seven total All-Region First Teamers.

Besides excelling on the field, the Terriers had an outstanding year in the classroom with a cumulative 3.61 GPA. Senior and PL Defensive Player of the Year Caitlin Coker earned not only the program's second consecutive PL Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award but also the athletic department's second ever PL Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year nod. Coker was joined by Roncin (Player of the Year), Ricard (Rookie), senior Allison Boaz (Pitcher) in helping BU earn the conference's major awards sweep.
