BOSTON - Senior
Catherine Foulem scored with just under a minute to play to send the game into overtime but No. 14 Northeastern ended the game just 27 seconds into the extra session to claim a 2-1 victory over Boston University in the championship game of the 45th Dunkin' Women's Beanpot on Tuesday evening at TD Garden.
The crosstown rivals played in front of a crowd of 10,633, the largest to ever watch a women's hockey game in New England. It was also the highest-attended game for a women's team in BU Athletics history.
Skylar Irving scored both of the Huskies' goals, including the game's first tally in the final minute of the second period, to claim MVP honors as Northeastern successfully defended its 2023 Beanpot crown.Â
After BU pulled goaltender
Callie Shanahan for an extra skater with three minutes to play, Foulem took a pass from sophomore
Sydney Healey and converted from the left circle with a shot that went through the legs of NU netminder Gwyneth Philips with just 58.1 seconds remaining in regulation.
BU moves to an even 11-11-3 on the year while Northeastern improves to 16-9-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers got off to a strong start and earned the game's first power play just 3:18 into the contest.
- On the power play, BU generated a strong scoring chance with an open look but could not convert.
- The rest of the period was back-and-forth with a power-play opportunity apiece but each team's defense stepped up when it needed to.
- BU had the better of the play in the second, earning two more power plays, but it was the Huskies that got on the board first.
- Irving took a pass from Abbey Marohn and skated through the left circle before beating Shanahan to the far post with just 33.7 seconds lift in the middle period.
- Northeastern was able to limit the Terriers to just five shots on goal in the third period but BU scored on the final one to send the game to overtime.Â
- Moments after sophomore Brooke Disher prevented an empty-net goal with a blocked shot on an elevated puck, Healey received a pass from freshman Alex Law and spotted Foulem cutting through the left side, where she scored her 10th goal of the season to ignite the BU fans.
- However, Northeastern would need just 27 seconds in overtime to score the decisive goal and claim the title.
