WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior
Kelsi Mingo matched her career-high with 15 points, and
Caitlin Weimar secured her 15th double-double of the year, but the Boston University women's basketball team fell to Holy Cross 61-50 on Monday evening at the Hart Center Arena.
BU (13-7, 5-4 PL) trailed for nearly 37 minutes in the game, as the Crusaders (14-6, 8-1 PL) created a 13-point halftime lead. The Terriers clawed back to make it a two-possession contest on multiple occasions, but could not halt Holy Cross' unbeaten home streak.
Mingo paced the Terriers with four triples on 80 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Weimar collected 13 points, 17 rebounds, and two blocks. Junior
Alex Giannaros added 11 points and three steals.
Cara McCormack led all scorers with 18 points, making 50 percent of her shots. Bronagh Power-Cassidy totaled 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither side scored in the first 1:15 of the contest, but then each found buckets on the next four possessions following Weimar's ice-breaking layup. Power-Cassidy knocked down a jumper at the 5:27 mark to put the home team up 9-6.
- The Crusaders took a five-point lead after Simone Foreman nailed a right-wing triple, but Mingo responded with her second three of the frame to bring BU within 16-14, which held at the end of the first.
- Giannaros banked in a contested layup to level the score at 16-16 before five-straight Power-Cassidy points returned the lead to Holy Cross 1:32 into the second.
- BU limited the Crusaders to one point over the next five-plus minutes, as Giannaros' three-pointer near the midpoint of the stanza cut the Terrier deficit to 22-21.
- However, Holy Cross closed the first half on a 12-0 run, capped with threes from McCormack and Kaitlyn Flanagan, to go into the locker room up 34-21.
- The Terriers opened the third quarter with seven-straight points. Weimar made a pair of layups, and sophomore Anastasiia Semenova nailed a left wing three-pointer from senior Sophie Beneventine's pass to cut the gap to 34-28 with 5:45 left in the third.
- BU got as close to the Crusaders as three points, 38-35, in the third after Giannaros' layup with 38 seconds on the clock. Janelle Allen sank a layup on the next Holy Cross possession to create a five-point cushion heading to the fourth quarter.
- Mingo broke the Terriers' fourth-quarter scoring drought with a three at the 7:35 mark, bringing BU within 43-38. However, the Crusaders snagged an offensive rebound on its next possession, giving way to Flanagan's three-pointer to extended the home side's lead to eight.
- That ignited a 7-0 Crusader burst to push the deficit to 50-38, halted by Giannaros' spin-move near the right block for a layup with 4:35 remaining in regulation.
- The closest BU got from there was eight points, 50-42, before Allen's second-chance putback with 2:08 to play restored the double-digit edge for good.
