LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Concluding its first West Coast trip in 11 years, the Boston University men's basketball team will visit 11-time NCAA national champion UCLA on Monday night with tip-off slated for 10 p.m. ET.
Both squads are looking to bounce back from Friday night losses with the Terriers coming up short at San Diego (74-60) and the Bruins falling to New Mexico (72-64) on a neutral court in Nevada. Currently No. 22 nationally, UCLA will mark BU's first ranked opponent since a visit to No. 10 Miami in 2017 if the Bruins remain in the top 25 Monday.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- After appearing in just eight games last season due to injury with averages of 6.3 ppg and 4.0 rpg, senior Malcolm Chimezie is currently leading BU in rebounds at 8.0 rpg while ranking second in scoring at 11.5 ppg.
- Senior Ben Palacios made his first appearance of the year at San Diego and hit three 3-pointers on his way to 15 points, topping the 14 points scored last year against Bryant during his first season at BU.
- Making his first two career starts this November, sophomore Michael McNair has flushed three 3-pointers in both contests to average 10.5 ppg alongside graduate student Miles Brewster.
- All three newcomers have appeared in both games with freshman Ben Defty contributing 4.5 ppg and 4.0 rpg while shooting 66.7 percent from the field.
- Through two games, the Terriers are averaging 66.0 ppg and 40.7 FG% while holding opponents to 77.0 ppg and 54.7 FG%, respectively.
- Opponents have claimed 13 blocks against BU's two while posting a 21-14 advantage in made free throws.
SCOUTING UCLA
- The Bruins started the season with an 85-50 win over Rider last Monday after posting a 16-17 record last season with a 10-10 mark in the Pac-12.
- 6-foot-9 forward and Oregon State transfer Tyler Bilodeau is the lone Bruin averaging double figures in points (20.5 ppg) or rebounds (10.5 rpg) while shooting 47.2 percent from the field.
- Averaging a team-high 4.0 apg and 3.5 spg, 6-foot-3 guard Skyy Clark is with his third school following one-year stints at both Louisville and Illinois.
- Seven Bruins have hit two 3-pointers apiece, and UCLA has posted a 12-5 advantage in blocks.
- Overall, UCLA is averaging 74.5 ppg and 45.0 FG% while holding opponents to 61.0 ppg and 40.2 FG%.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Bruins are 2-0 all-time with 77-43 home win in 1981 and 85-74 home victory in 1988.
- On Friday, UCLA lost to a New Mexico squad led by head coach Richard Pitino. Coincidentally, the Terriers' head coach during their first trip to UCLA was Richard's father, Rick.
- If the game was held a year ago, Terriers would have been seeking first Pac-12 win since claiming a 96-78 win in the 2009 CBI First Round at Oregon St.
- Now, the Terriers will try to beat a Big Ten team for first time since earning a 71-67 win vs. Indiana at the 2009 Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Head coach Joe Jones led BU to a win at Maryland in 2013 when the Terrapins were still in the ACC.
LOOKING AHEAD
- BU will return home to host Dartmouth on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 1 p.m.
- The teams have met five times since 2018 after previously playing in 2002 with BU posting a 3-2 record, including 2-0 home mark.
- The Big Green pulled out a 63-54 victory in Hanover, New Hampshire, last December to avenge the Terriers' 67-59 win from a year prior.
